The GATER in Helldivers 2 is a key part of the Conducting Mobile Substance Extraction mission. You can’t complete this task without it. Here’s what you need to know to operate the GATER successfully.
First, when starting a mission, head to the GATER marked on your map. Climb inside and drive it toward any of the indicated sites. Once you’re directly over a site, a new objective called a Stratagem will appear. Get out of the driver’s seat and activate the Stratagem to have the GATER drill into the ground. After drilling, hop back in and repeat this process at all designated sites. Once all sites are drilled, an aircraft will come to pick up the storage tanks from the GATER, and then the tanks will explode, ending the mission. You can then leave safely.
Keep in mind, handling the GATER isn’t always easy. It’s slow, vulnerable, and constantly under attack. The vehicle has a built-in turret, but it can only turn so much. If the GATER gets destroyed, the mission fails and there’s no way to fix it, so staying alert and protecting the vehicle is crucial.
Driving the GATER is similar to the Helldivers 2 FRV vehicle, using the same control setup. Use the bumpers (LB and RB or L1 and R1) to shift gears, and press RT or R2 to accelerate. To reverse, switch to gear R and then press R2. Remember, the GATER isn’t fast, and it’s harder to maneuver than the FRV, so don’t expect quick escapes.
