The new hotel in Animal Crossing: New Horizons opens up on the dock located southeast of your island—on the same pier where you can catch Kapp’n’s boat tours. However, the hotel isn’t ready for guests just yet; it still needs some help from you. To get things rolling, you’ll need to decorate the rooms inside. Once you’ve done that, you’ll earn hotel tickets, which you can trade for special items and furniture. Here’s what you need to know about unlocking the hotel, earning tickets, and using them.
### How to unlock the Animal Crossing: New Horizons hotel
To unlock the hotel, your island must have at least a 3-star rating, and Kapp’n needs to be visiting your island. If you meet these conditions but Kapp’n isn’t there, you might just need to donate more to the museum. Also, make sure you’ve updated your game to version 3.0, as the hotel feature is part of this free update.
If everything’s in order, the next time Isabelle does her morning announcement, she’ll inform you about the hotel’s opening. For many players, it might load automatically, but if not, don’t worry—just keep an eye out.
After the hotel is open, head over to Resident Services. Tom Nook will suggest celebrating the opening, but you don’t have to do that to start decorating.
### How to decorate hotel rooms
Once inside, you’ll be introduced to Leilani, who is waiting at the door with her husband, Kapp’n. The hotel can’t accept guests yet because the rooms aren’t decorated. Each day, your task is to decorate two rooms. The first room should follow a seaside theme, and Leilani will give you a list of recommended items to use. You can follow her suggestions or use your own items to make the room look just right.
To decorate, press down on the D-Pad to enter decorating mode, then press right to open your inventory. If you’ve purchased the DLC, you’ll get extra design tools, but even without it, you can still create nice rooms using the suggested items. After decorating, you’ll need to take a photo with the Camera app on your NookPhone. Show the photo to Leilani, and she’ll decide whether your room is good enough to be opened to hotel guests. Once approved, you can move on to the next room.
Leilani will also give you options for different themes for each new room: Japanese or Modern for Room 2, Simple or Ranch for Room 3, Kiddie or Dreamy for Room 4, and so on. So far, it looks like you can decorate about six rooms in total, with a new set each day.
After decorating your first room, you can also display outfits created on the mannequins in the lobby. Guests can borrow these outfits during their stay. For reaching this stage, consider using the megaphone to invite visitors to your island.
### How to earn hotel tickets
For each room you decorate, you’ll earn 200 hotel tickets, so decorating two rooms a day means collecting 400 tickets daily. Want more? You can craft DIY items to exchange for tickets at the pier’s item box. Each day, the box will list craft requests, like traditional straw coats or wooden furniture, and turning in these items will earn you more tickets. The full list of requests resets every Monday, providing fresh opportunities.
### How to spend hotel tickets
Once you’ve accumulated tickets, the main way to spend them is at Grams’ Souvenir Shop, located inside the hotel lobby. Kapp’n’s grandma sells souvenir and branded items, such as snow globes, towel racks, or decorative pieces for your rooms—like mug shelves or tiny houses. Each day, she also offers a couple of items at a discount, so it’s worth checking her shop regularly.
As more guests stay at your hotel, she’ll be able to expand her catalog, offering more items to customize your island’s look. The more decorating you do, the better her selection becomes, making it a fun daily task.
### Additional updates
The 3.0 update added more treasures, like new Animal Crossing-themed Zelda items and the Resetti Reset Service. Keep exploring and decorating to make your hotel the best it can be!
