EA’s game “Skate” is free to play, but managing the in-game currency can be tricky. Whether you’re opening loot boxes or buying gear from the shop, you’ll notice that San Vansterdam feels like an expensive city to live and skate in 2025.

If you’re looking to switch out your basic board and outfit, earning one type of in-game money is relatively easy. You won’t be able to buy everything with the most common currency, but with some luck, you can gather enough to customize your character and showcase your personality in the game.

How the Currency Works in Skate

“Skate” has two main types of currency: San Van Bucks and Rip Chips. San Van Bucks, marked with a pink logo, are the premium currency that you can buy with real money. The available bundles are:

  • $4.99 for 500 Bucks
  • $9.99 for 1,050 Bucks
  • $24.99 for 2,800 Bucks
  • $49.99 for 5,900 Bucks
  • $99.99 for 12,000 Bucks

Currently, doing missions or leveling up in the game won’t give you any San Van Bucks, besides a small amount of 250 from playtests. Most shop items require San Van Bucks, so if you don’t want to spend real money, your options there are limited.

On the other hand, Rip Chips, represented by orange tokens, are mostly earned through gameplay. You can see how many Rip Chips you’ll earn by completing various challenges, tasks, or missions around San Vansterdam.

How to Earn Rip Chips

You can start earning Rip Chips easily by completing daily challenges and missions. Regular challenges and missions will reward you with a good amount of Rip Chips, while time-limited city challenges give smaller doses. As you level up neighborhoods by progressing in the game, new challenges open up, giving you more chances to earn Rip Chips.

While most shop items favor San Van Bucks, Rip Chips can be used to open product boxes—game’s loot boxes—containing randomized rewards. Opening a box costs between 150 Rip Chips and more, and each box gives you one item.

You’ll naturally earn money by playing and exploring the map, but checking the rewards beforehand can help you maximize your earnings. The real challenge is earning the premium currency, which doesn’t come easily.
