When you start playing Ghost of Yotei, your main goal is to find and track down the Yotei Six, but the game doesn’t give any specific instructions on where to go next. Instead, it encourages you to explore Ezo and figure things out on your own. The idea is for players to carve their own path by venturing out into the world and seeing what adventures await. However, this freeform approach can sometimes feel a bit overwhelming, especially with lots of quests available at once.
Warning: Spoilers for story and progression in Ghost of Yotei.
At the beginning, Atsu marks her first target by killing the Snake, starting the myth of the onryō. Early in the game, you’ll quickly find three key leads: clues about the Kitsune, the Oni, and the Saito brothers (the Dragon and the Spider). Although there are no wrong choices, it makes sense to start chasing the Kitsune first.
Consider Starting With the Kitsune
Heading North to Teshio Ridge
I recommend beginning your hunt for the Kitsune at Teshio Ridge, the northernmost area on the map. From the starting point in the Yotei Grasslands, travel northeast into Tokachi Range (which connects to the grasslands). Then, take a ferry across the Great Lake to reach Nayoro Wilds, a smaller zone. Continue heading north to arrive at Teshio Ridge.
The reason to pursue the Kitsune first is that it will let you explore key regions like the Yotei Grasslands and Tokachi Range, which serve as central hubs connecting to other areas. You’ll also pass through Nayoro Wilds, a peaceful Ainu community with interesting side quests that help develop Atsu’s character and give you background on the Ainu artifacts scattered throughout the game.
Pro Tip:
Make sure you pick up the Dual Katanas from Hanbei in the Yotei Grasslands and the Odachi from Master Yoshida in Tokachi Range before taking the ferry.
Most importantly, chasing the Kitsune will introduce you to Oyuki, an important character in the story. Meeting her unlocks a special ability called “Listen,” which helps with stealth sections by revealing enemies and animals nearby.
The Search Is Purposefully Open-Ended
Even though starting with the Kitsune can unlock helpful mechanics and fits well with the story, the game is designed to be flexible. The main storyline about finding the Yotei Six is intentionally left open, so it doesn’t matter which leads you follow first.
Ghost of Yotei is meant to be a wandering samurai story, so if you’re unsure where to go, just do the quests that catch your interest. It’s also a good idea to avoid constantly opening the map. Instead, rely on Atsu’s spyglass to navigate, which will naturally limit your options and guide you along the way.
If you need guidance:
Head north, and along the journey, you’ll discover plenty of interesting places and side quests in the process. The game encourages exploration, so follow your curiosity and see where it leads.
