In Battlefield 6, every class starts with two Training Paths available at launch. One of these paths is unlocked automatically. For the Engineer class, unlocking the second path, called Combat Engineer, is generally easier than for other classes. Once you unlock the Combat Engineer path, you’ll gain access to a new loadout, giving you three different setups. This allows you to switch roles quickly between lives.
Since new weapons and class gadgets take some time to unlock in Battlefield 6, this guide focuses on the items you’ll likely have by the time you reach the Combat Engineer training path, assuming you’ve been regularly playing the Engineer. For reference, I unlocked the Combat Engineer around level 30.
Combat Engineer Training Path Explained
As you earn points with the Combat Engineer, you’ll unlock these benefits in order:
- Gadget Fortification: Fixing a friendly gadget increases its maximum health permanently.
- Overheat Control: Slows down heat buildup on gadgets and vehicle weapons by 50%.
- Vehicle Regeneration: When in a vehicle, its health starts to regenerate (after it reaches a critical damage level).
- Thermal Overdrive (Active Ability): The repair tool works 50% faster for 10 seconds.
Use active abilities by pressing R1 + L1 on PlayStation, RB + LB on Xbox, or Q/mouse wheel on PC.
The Combat Engineer has a slightly different role than the Anti-Armor Path. While Anti-Armor excels on the ground with rockets, the Combat Engineer focuses more on vehicles. It’s helpful to pilot vehicles often and learn how they work. But even if you’re just a passenger, the Combat Engineer can be very useful. For example, in a tank, you can defend yourself while healing and regenerating the tank’s health. Overheat Control is especially useful when you’re the gunner, working to spot enemies with rocket launchers.
Best Loadout for Combat Engineer Path
Here’s what I recommend for weapons and gadgets when starting out:
- Primary: UMG-40
- Secondary: ES 5.7
- Gadget 1: RPG-7V2
- Gadget 2: Vehicle Supply Crate
- Throwable: Anti-Vehicle Grenade
- Melee: Sledgehammer
While I usually use a carbine (like the AK-205) for accuracy at longer ranges, your main focus as a Combat Engineer is to protect your vehicle. An SMG is great for quickly taking out enemies approaching with C4 or mines. The UMG-40 is a good choice early on because of its accuracy, despite its slower rate of fire.
The RPG is an essential tool in your arsenal. It can take down tanks and other vehicles, especially if you aim for the sides and back where they are more vulnerable. Even if you’re just a passenger, firing rockets can give your team a big advantage in tank duels or vehicle fights.
Unlocking the Vehicle Supply Crate
Before you get to the Combat Engineer path, you’ll unlock the Vehicle Supply Crate. This can be a game-changer. If you can keep a vehicle alive for a while, you’ll rarely run out of ammo. When using the crate, make sure you and your vehicle are behind cover and away from enemies. You’ll need to get out of the vehicle to place it, but once set up, it acts like a portable supply point. It also reduces your equipment cooldowns, so placing it near an objective can give your team a big edge.
While Mini Frag Grenades are fun, it’s more effective for an Engineer to carry tools that can destroy vehicles. Anti-vehicle grenades can be decisive between destroying a vehicle or letting it escape and be repaired later.
This overview should help you understand the Combat Engineer path better and make the most of your loadout in Battlefield 6.
