Just like the previous games in the series, Borderlands 4 is all about collecting loot. The best rewards usually come from defeating bosses. While players can customize their skills, passives, and overall loadouts, luck plays a big role in what weapons and gear they receive when battling these enemies.
You’re pretty much guaranteed to get some kind of upgrade whenever you fight a boss. Almost all bosses drop legendary gear, which is the rarest and most powerful type of loot in the game. To help you out, here’s a list of each boss along with their legendary loot drops, plus some tips for beating them.
Warden Scathe
“Guns Blazing”
Warden Scathe is the first boss you encounter in Borderlands 4, during the mission “Guns Blazing.” He’s part of the tutorial and is quite easy to defeat. Since he’s an early-game boss, he doesn’t drop legendary loot. Just beat him when instructed and continue to the next part of the game.
Splashzone
“Recruitment Drive”
Splashzone is a bandit leader based in Fadefields, specifically at Riptide Grotto. He’s a melee fighter with a huge arm, making him a powerful close-range attacker. But don’t worry, he also drops some good legendary gear suitable for ranged fighters.
Loot Highlights:
- Firewerks: Armor shield with homing missiles that automatically target nearby enemies after you kill one.
- Jelly: Grenade that spawns another grenade after explosion.
- Lead Balloon: Lightweight shotgun with shells that float upward and explode into smaller projectiles.
Horace
“Down And Outbound”
Horace appears during the third main mission, “Down and Outbound,” in the Hungering Plain. He summons allies called Synth and has an energy shield that blocks ballistic damage. Using energy weapons can help you pierce his shield more easily.
Loot Highlights:
- Aegon’s Dream: Assault rifle firing both incendiary and cryo ammo.
- Lucky Clover: Pistol that fires homing missiles when reloaded.
The Oppressor
“A Lot To Process”
The Oppressor shows up in the main story during “A Lot To Process.” It’s not a person but a gigantic, flying machine that shoots artillery from above. Use ranged weapons to stay safe and attack from afar.
Loot Highlights:
- Streamer: Heavy projectile launcher that creates a damage beam on impact.
- Asher’s Rise: Sniper rifle that does extra damage and applies status effects on critical hits.
- Blood Analyzer: Replikit that grants temporary immunity to specific elemental damages.
Bio-Bulkhead
“One Fell Swoop”
Bio-Bulkhead is a melee-focused boss fought during “One Fell Swoop.” He gets close and stays there, so hitting him with locust canisters helps reduce his damage resistance.
Loot Highlights:
- Budget Deity: Pistol with lock-on enemies.
- Sho Kunai: Grenade that gains speed with consecutive hits.
- Waterfall: Grenade that causes chain explosions when damaging enemies.
Vile Lictor
“His Vile Sanctum”
Vile Lictor is a lieutenant in the Timekeeper’s organization, fought in the Umbral Foundry. Watch out for projectiles and AoEs during this tough fight.
Loot Highlights:
- Blacksmith: Amon Class Mod that boosts gun damage with active Forgedrones.
- Generator: Harlowe Class Mod increasing action skill power.
- Instigator: Rafa Class Mod stacking gun damage.
- Others include Pistol, Shield, and Vex Class Mods with various effects.
Driller Hole
“Unpaid Tab”
Fighting Driller Hole occurs in the Queen’s Cradle area of Tonnage Peel. He uses incendiary damage over large areas, so avoid standing in fire.
Loot Highlights:
- Fuse: Grenade Ordnance.
- GMR: Assault Rifle with damage buffs when scoped.
- Katagawa’s Revenge: Sniper with a large AoE.
Callis the Ripper Queen & Moon-Maddened Callis
“Her Flaming Vision” & “Another Day, Another Universe”
First, you face Callis during “Her Flaming Vision” in Fallen Crown’s Moon-Called Throne. She’s the final lieutenant, using melee and ranged attacks with special effects. Later, in “Another Day, Another Universe,” you encounter her again as Moon-Maddened Callis, a more difficult boss.
Loot Highlights from both fights include:
- Esgrimidor (Rafa Mod): Enhances melee crits.
- Illusionist (Vex Mod): Summons Specters and Reapers.
- Queen’s Rest (Pistol): Fires homing rounds and creates sticky homing weapons.
- Gamma Void (Heavy Weapon): Creates radiation AoEs.
- Ohm I Got (SMG): Boosts energy transfer effects.
The Timekeeper
“The Timekeeper’s Order”
Finally, the boss fight against the Timekeeper takes place in the Dominion’s Terminus District. It features multiple phases with various weapons dropping, each with unique effects like Propagation (more projectiles at longer range), Constellation (vertical/horizontal firing), and more.
Loot Highlights:
- Borstel Ballista: Sniper Rifle with projectile propagation.
- Plasma Coil: SMG with superheated effects.
- Star Helix: Assault rifle with constellation-style firing.
- Timekeeper’s New Shield: Shields that boost max health and regeneration.
That covers all the legendary loot known so far in Borderlands 4. As new updates come out and more bosses are defeated, we’ll keep this list updated with the latest gear.
