Bladesinging is an exciting new subclass for Wizards introduced in Baldur’s Gate 3 with patch 8. This subclass allows wizards to master the art of swordsmanship while harnessing the power of Bladesong, enhancing both their defenses and agility.

The Bladesinging Wizard transforms their sword into a tool for casting spells, making them a formidable presence in any party. They also have access to a variety of spells from other wizard subclasses, offering a well-rounded combination of offense and support.

This guide will walk you through creating an impressive Bladesinging Wizard build in Baldur’s Gate 3, capable of overpowering any adversary that crosses your path.

Starting Your Bladesinging Wizard Build at Level 1

At level 1, after you’ve completed character creation, you’ll make these key selections:

Race: Half-Elf

Subrace: Drow Half-Elf

Class: Wizard

You’ll begin with three cantrips. We recommend:

Booming Blade: Strike an enemy, inflicting 1d6 Thunder Damage if they attempt to move.

Bone Chill: Inflicts 1d8 Necrotic damage. Undead foes face disadvantages on their attack rolls.

Ray of Frost: Deals 1d8 cold damage, slowing the target’s movement by 3m.

You can now prepare a total of six spells, including:

Mage Armor: Raises your Armor Class to 13 + your Dexterity Modifier.

Shield: Boosts your Armor Class by 5 when attacked and makes you immune to Magic Missile.

Magic Missile: Inflicts 3d4 + 3 force damage.

Thunderwave: Deals 2d8 Thunder damage, halving damage if a target saves.

Ice Knife: Causes 1d10 piercing damage plus 2d6 cold damage, creating an explodable shard.

Find Familiar: Summons a fey creature of your choice.

Skill Points: Strength (8), Dexterity (15+1), Constitution (14), Intelligence (14+2), Wisdom (10), Charisma (10).

With these selections, your proficiencies will include:

Weapons: Daggers, Quarterstaffs, Light Crossbows, Spears, Pikes, and Halberds.

Skills: Arcana, Insight, Medicine, and Intimidation.

Level 2 Choices for Your Bladesinging Wizard Build

Upon hitting level 2, your HP will rise from 8 to 14, and you can select your subclass:

Subclass: Bladesinging

With this choice, you gain:

Training in War and Song: Proficiency in Light armor and Performance, along with combat skills for Longswords, Scimitars, Rapiers, Shortswords, Sickles, and Daggers.

Bladesong Power: A resource for activating your Bladesong.

Bladesong: Grants a +2 bonus to Armor Class, increases movement speed by 3m, and gives advantages in Acrobatics, along with a +2 bonus to Constitution saving throws.

You can also learn two new spells at this stage:

Chromatic Orb: Inflicts 3d8 elemental damage and leaves an elemental surface behind.

Fog Cloud: Creates a cloud that obscures and blinds creatures inside for 14 turns.

For your Bladesinging weapon, we recommend Rapiers for optimal effectiveness.

Keep your current spell preparations; they are quite effective for now.

Level 3 Updates for Your Bladesinging Wizard Build

At level 3, your HP will rise to 20, and you will gain the ability to prepare two additional spells:

Hold Person: Stuns an enemy, preventing them from acting, reacting, or moving. Any attacks against them within a 3m radius are guaranteed critical hits.

Misty Step: Teleports you to a location within your line of sight.

Also, make sure to prepare the Hold Person spell.

Level 4 Updates for Your Bladesinging Wizard Build

When you reach level 4, your HP increases to 26. You’ll have the opportunity to choose a new cantrip:

Fire Bolt: Deals 1d10 fire damage to foes.

Additionally, you can pick two new spells:

Scorching Ray: Inflicts 6d6 fire damage on targets.

Darkness: Casts a shroud of darkness that obstructs ranged attacks.

Don’t forget to prepare the Find Familiar spell at this level, and you also unlock your first feat slot:

Feat: Ability Points: Increase your Intelligence stat by two points, bringing it to 18.

Level 5 Enhancements for Your Bladesinging Wizard Build

Upon achieving level 5, your HP increases to 32, and you gain another Bladesong Power.

At this level, you can also access level 3 spells:

Haste: Targets you or an ally, giving them an extra action, increased speed, and a +2 armor class bonus.

Counterspell: Interrupts an enemy’s spellcasting.

Make sure to prepare the Counterspell as part of your strategy.

Level 6 Enhancements for Your Bladesinging Wizard Build

At level 6, your HP will rise to 38 and you can prepare two more spells:

Fireball: Causes an explosion of 8d6 fire damage to the primary target and nearby enemies.

Lightning Bolt: Unleashes an 8d6 lightning strike in a line, dealing half damage on a successful save.

Prepare both spells while adjusting your spell list to remove Find Familiar.

With this level, you also receive a new subclass feature:

Extra Attack: Grants an additional attack when you hit an enemy with a weapon or an unarmed strike.

Level 7 Choices for Your Bladesinging Wizard Build

At level 7, your HP will rise to 44. You’ll now unlock access to level 4 spells, allowing you to select two new options:

Conjure Minor Elemental: Summons an elemental ally that fights for you.

Ice Storm: Calls down ice to deal 2d8 bludgeoning and 4d6 cold damage to nearby enemies. They take half damage on a successful save.

Prepare the Conjure Minor Elemental spell for your upcoming encounters.

Level 8 Enhancements for Your Bladesinging Wizard Build

Upon reaching level 8, your HP will increase to 50, unlocking your second feat slot.

Feat: Ability Improvement: Allocate both points to boost your Intelligence to 20.

You’ll also select two new spells:

Confusion: Causes a group of enemies to act randomly, potentially skipping their turns.

Wall of Fire: Deals 5d8 fire damage to enemies near the wall.

Level 9 Updates for Your Bladesinging Wizard Build

At level 9, your HP increases to 56. You’ll also gain additional Songblade Power.

Level 5 spells become available now, allowing you to learn:

Cone of Cold: Inflicts 8d8 cold damage to targets while halving damage on a successful save.

Conjure Elemental: Summons a powerful elemental to fight alongside you.

Prepare both spells before moving forward.

Level 10 Enhancements for Your Bladesinging Wizard Build

By level 10, your HP rises to 62, and you gain a new subclass feature:

Song of Defense: Allows you to mitigate damage taken during Bladesong by expending spell slots to reduce damage by 5 for each slot.

You also have access to one additional bonus cantrip:

Shocking Grasp: Deals 3d8 lightning damage and has advantage against metallic enemies.

Prepare two new spells at this level:

Hold Monster: Paralyzes an enemy, rendering them immobile. Critically hit them with any attacks from within 3m.

Planar Binding: Binds an otherworldly creature to your service for ten turns.

Ensure Hold Monster is prepared as you continue your journey.

Level 11 Updates for Your Bladesinging Wizard Build

At level 11, your HP jumps to 68, and you can now access level 6 spells, including:

Chain Lightning: Deals 10d8 lightning damage to a primary target, plus additional lightning strikes to three other enemies.
