Ubisoft is known for including microtransactions in its full-priced games. Since Assassin’s Creed 3, nearly every game in the Assassin’s Creed series has offered players extras like time-savers, armor packs, and upgrade points for purchase. Upcoming games, including the next Ghost Recon, seem set to follow this trend.
It’s quite unusual for Ubisoft to launch a game that doesn’t have microtransactions, whether it’s single-player or multiplayer. You might think they do this to earn more money on top of the already high price tag, which is around $70 or even $80 now. However, many people dislike these practices. Ubisoft believes that microtransactions actually enhance the gaming experience.
Ubisoft Claims Microtransactions Make Games More Fun
This statement comes from a recent financial report where CEO Yves Guillemot told investors that microtransactions in their games allow players to “personalize their avatars or progress more quickly.” He emphasized that these transactions are always optional.
If Ubisoft were referring to free-to-play games, that might make more sense. But they are talking about their own premium games. Most players expect to enjoy the full game experience for the base price, which has been increasing steadily over the years.
Ubisoft does claim they are responsible with their monetization. They mentioned establishing a team to address monetization and its risks, ensuring they avoid manipulative practices. However, they didn’t explain how they would achieve this, which leaves some uncertainty about the fairness of their microtransactions.
