A Mystery in the Depths: A Guide to the Quest in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
A Mystery in the Depths is a pivotal quest in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, where you delve into one of Link’s fundamental abilities, culminating in a battle against a formidable boss.
Starting and finishing this quest can prove to be more challenging than it appears. This guide provides a step-by-step breakdown to assist you in your endeavor.
Initiating A Mystery in the Depths in Zelda: TotK
To kick off this quest, you must speak with Josha, located in Lookout Landing, directly beneath Purah. However, before you can do this, it’s essential that you complete at least one Regional Phenomena quest (the Tulin of Rito is highly recommended) along with another quest called Camera Work in the Depths.
Once these prerequisites are met, engage in conversation with Josha. She will provide you with some Brightbloom Seeds and instruct you to follow a series of mysterious statues located in the depths.
Following the Statues in the Depths
The first statue you need to find is close to the Iayusus Lightroot. If you’ve previously activated this lightroot, you can fast-travel there to locate the statue.
This statue points south. Carefully follow the direction indicated by the statues while either evading or defeating the enemy camps along the way. Utilize the Brightbloom seeds Josha gave you to illuminate your path.
Tip: You can toss Brightbloom seeds by hand to save your arrows for later use.
The next lightroot you’ll encounter along your journey is the Nihcayam Lightroot. Activating this lightroot establishes a new fast-travel point. Continue southward until you reach the Great Abandoned Central Mine.
Unlocking the Autobuild Ability and Battling Master Kohga
Upon reaching the Great Abandoned Central Mine, you will see several constructs. Speak with the steward construct to unlock the Autobuild ability, which lets you recreate any construct you’ve previously designed using Ultrahand.
The constructs will then require you to prove your skills by repairing a vehicle. Once you successfully do so, Master Kohga will arrive aboard his own vehicle.
Defeating Master Kohga isn’t straightforward; he will alter his vehicle multiple times throughout the battle. To excel in this fight, consider using Keese Eyeballs with your arrows, or climb onto his vehicle for a surprise attack.
Be cautious of his attacks from the sides, and keep your health up as recommended in our cooking guide. After you defeat Master Kohga, he will retreat, leaving you with a Schema Stone.
Schema Stones allow you to save constructs for later Autobuild use.
Returning to Josha
After taking down Master Kohga, fast-travel back to the Lookout Landing Skyview Tower and speak with Josha again. She will present you with another schema stone and request that you repair the hot air balloon for Robbie.
Go outside and use your Autobuild ability to fix the hot air balloon. This will enable Robbie to return to Hateno Village, where you can visit his lab for upgrades to your Purah Pad.
With that, A Mystery in the Depths quest will come to an end.
