The vocation system in Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined gets most of the attention—and for good reason. However, choosing the right weapons for your party members is equally important to maximize their potential. Each character can use different weapon types, and selecting the best gear involves considering not just attack strength but also their specific roles and your Vocation setups.
We’ll explore all six characters’ weapon options and what to focus on during their gear-up process, including our recommendations for the best endgame weapons for the five characters who stay with you till the end.
These suggestions are based on our Top Vocations guide but should be applicable regardless of the strategies you choose for these characters.
Be aware that discussing endgame characters may involve spoilers about who remains in your party at the game’s conclusion!
Best Weapons for the Hero
The Hero boasts the most diverse weapon options in the game, fitting his role as the ultimate all-rounder. He can wield swords, spears, axes, boomerangs, knives, and hammers, giving you great flexibility in how you develop him.
Throughout the game, swords are generally the best choice for the Hero. He has access to the widest variety of swords, including exclusive Hero blades and some of the strongest swords in the game—all of which should be equipped based on current availability and power.
Secondary options like boomerangs are useful mainly for random battles since they hit all enemies simultaneously, so keep these in mind as situational gear.
Endgame Weapon:
The top choice is the Supreme Sea Serpent Sabre, which boasts +190 Attack. It’s exclusive to the Hero and obtained through story progression, making it the ultimate sword for him.
Best Weapons for Kiefer
Kiefer is a temporary party member, leaving partway through the story. Rest assured, items equipped on him are returned upon his departure, so don’t worry about losing gear.
While he’s with you, equip him with the strongest weapons you find—especially swords or axes—since he functions as a support and physical attacker. His role later shifts more toward the physical center of the party, so maximizing his attack power is key.
Best Weapons for Maribel
Maribel is the main spellcaster in your party. Her weapon choices should mainly boost her magic capabilities.
Staves are her primary weapons for most of the game, often providing bonuses to Magical Might and MP recovery—crucial for casting spells during long dungeons and boss fights.
While whips can add some group damage without using MP, they generally don’t boost magic stats. Fans offer some passive bonuses and group attacks, but endgame staves tend to outperform them.
Endgame Weapons:
The best staff for her will depend on your preferred playstyle. You have two main choices:
- The Faerie King’s Staff boosts both Magical Might and Mending significantly, and can recover her HP each turn while reducing damage taken.
- The Magma Staff offers even more Magical Might but sacrifices some Mending and HP recovery. It also allows her to deal fire damage to all enemies by using it in battle.
Both are excellent options, so keep both in your inventory and choose based on your needs.
Best Weapons for Ruff
Ruff’s weapon type consists exclusively of Fangs, which make him a unique damage dealer with a clear upgrade path—Stone Fangs, Steel Fangs, Ferocious Fangs, and finally Orichalcum Fangs.
Claws and knives are also strong midgame options, especially the Dragon Claws and Beast Claws, or knives if you build a Thief vocation with him.
Endgame Weapon:
The Orichalcum Fangs are ideal for Ruff because they offer high Attack and are exclusive to him, avoiding gear competition with other characters. Their consistent scaling makes them a reliable choice.
Best Weapons for Aishe
Aishe’s versatility means she can wield swords, spears, axes, claws, knives, and fans, adapting to various roles.
Swords are her strongest offensive option, sharing many top-tier blades with the Hero and Mervyn, like the Hypernova Sword and Okeanos Sword, making her a formidable damage dealer in offensive setups.
In support roles, she can use staves to boost her magic, with fans and spears providing niche benefits depending on your strategy.
Endgame Weapon:
The Uber Groming Whip excels because it hits all enemies with full damage, giving her a strong attack option that complements her support and offensive capabilities. Alternatively, the Hypernova Sword or Heaven’s Spear are also solid choices.
Best Weapons for Mervyn
Mervyn thrives with swords, which suit his role as a flexible frontliner capable of both offense and support.
He shares access to many high-quality swords with the Hero and Aishe, including the Hypernova Sword, making it the best endgame sword for him. It’s powerful, straightforward, and works well in his dual role.
Endgame Weapon:
The Hypernova Sword is the top weapon without conflicts in gear, perfectly rounding out his arsenal as the strongest sword available, assuming the Hero uses his exclusive Sabre.
This comprehensive look at weapons should help you optimize each character’s equipment to suit your strategy, whether focusing on pure damage, magic, or support.
