Dragon Quest 7 features one of the most detailed class systems in the series, giving players dozens of job options for their party members. With so many choices, figuring out the best vocations for each character can be tricky.
The game’s flexibility is one of its strengths—it allows players to build their party in many ways. However, some vocations suit certain characters better than others, depending on their natural stats and roles. When you add Moonlighting into the mix, the options become even more complex.
### Best Basic Vocations for Every Character
Basic classes are the foundation of your characters’ growth, providing essential skills that stay useful throughout the game. These classes teach fundamental abilities and can even be used as Moonlighting options later on.
| Character | Suggested Vocations | Reasoning |
|————|———————|————|
| Hero | Martial Artist / Warrior | The Hero is versatile and can succeed in many roles. Martial Artist and Warrior excel with their strong physical attacks. Warrior is tankier, but you don’t need a tank early on—you can unlock tanking abilities later through Moonlighting. He can also do well in Mage, especially if you have Moonlighting unlocked or other physical characters supporting him. Leveling him as Priest and then Paladin can also benefit him. |
| Maribel | Mage / Priest | Maribel’s strengths lie in magic—she excels in magical classes, producing high damage with powerful spells. |
| Ruff | Shepherd / Thief / Sailor | Ruff’s speed makes him ideal as an offensive support. Shepherd offers support, Thief boosts offense, and Sailor provides physical power and crowd control, especially against groups. |
| Aishe | Troubadour | Her default class is similarly supportive—Troubadour makes sense as her starting point. |
| Mervyn | Warrior | Mervyn works well as a tanky physical character. Focusing on Warrior boosts his strength and durability. |
### Best Intermediate (Advanced) Vocations for Every Character
Advanced classes are unlocked once you master specific basic classes, offering specialized roles and powerful skills that shape your strategy.
| Character | Suggested Vocations | Reasoning |
|————|———————|————|
| Hero | Armamentalist | Balancing physical and magic capabilities, this class makes good use of the Hero’s balanced stats. Gladiator is a solid fallback if needed. |
| Maribel | Sage | Combining the best parts of Mage and Priest, Sage offers offensive magic and support. She can also train secondary vocations like Druid or focus on offense or defense with Mage or Priest. |
| Ruff | Monster Master / Pirate | Monster Master fits Ruff’s stats for versatile offense, while Pirate enhances his physical power, especially with experience in Thief and Sailor. |
| Aishe | Luminary | A support-focused class, Luminary is worth unlocking after mastering three basic vocations. It grants abilities like Oomph and support spells. |
| Mervyn | Paladin | Starting with a support role, Mervyn can also switch to Gladiator for greater offense, making him adaptable for different battle tactics. |
### Best Endgame Builds for Each Character
Endgame builds combine the strongest classes and skills for maximum effectiveness. The following setups are designed to handle late-game challenges comfortably and are not the absolute optimize but proved successful.
| Character | Vocation Combinations | Reasoning |
|————|———————-|————|
| Hero | Hero / Armamentalist | A perfect mix of physical and magical power, turning the Hero into a versatile attacker capable of dealing with any boss. |
| Maribel | Sage / Mage | Offers a mix of magic damage and support, with spells like Sap and critical hits from Let Loose helping tackle tough fights. |
| Ruff | Monster Master / Pirate | Turns Ruff into a high-damage offensive character with flexible options for different types of enemies. |
| Aishe | Luminary / Druid | Makes her a powerful support and damage dealer, with abilities like Pass the Torch and Omniheal. |
| Mervyn | Champion / Paladin | Focuses on defensive strength and healing, making him ideal for the longest, toughest battles. |
Mastering these classes and choosing the right vocations for each character allows for a highly customized and powerful playthrough, especially tailored towards the endgame challenges.
