Trophies for Different Reasons

Trophies have many purposes. Some people collect them to showcase their achievements in video games. Others see them as motivation to finish challenges or to explore more of the game’s story. Sometimes, they’re just meant to make you laugh.

The Fun of Puns

There’s nothing quite like a good pun. Ironically, the best puns are often the worst, and the worst puns are sometimes the funniest. I’ve looked into some of the funniest bad puns hidden in achievement and trophy sections of popular games.

Get Caught In The Act

This trophy is a perfect example of Kojima’s humorous style. To earn it, you need to go into a locker, look at a funny photo, and get called out for it by Otacon. It’s not what it sounds like! Kojima loves to include cheeky humor, especially with titles related to his games.

From Shadow of the Damned’s “BIGBONER” gun to Bionic Commando’s “I got Hard” trophy, there are plenty of trophies with double meanings or sexy jokes. I included these for a bit of fun, so we keep the tone light.

Fallout 76: “Good Grief!”

Kill 20 Players

This trophy’s name is a playful twist on a common phrase. It’s a clever pun that also hints at Bethesda encouraging players to turn against each other in the game. The phrase normally suggests sadness, but here, it’s a fun nod to player conflict.

South Park: The Stick of Truth – “Gingivitis”

Get Bitten By Three Gingers Without Blocking

This trophy is a funny reference to the game’s humor. To get it, you need to be bitten by three different gingers without blocking. The name jokes about gum disease—gingivitis—adding a playful, nasty pun to the achievement.

Devil May Cry 5: “Well I’ll Be Damned”

Defeat Urizen During The Prelude Chapter

This achievement has a fun pun related to the phrase “well, I’ll be damned,” which is fitting because you defeat the boss you’re supposed to lose to early in the game. It’s a tongue-in-cheek joke about the game’s story and difficulty.

Persona 3 Reload: “SEES the Day”

Join SEES and Catch the Humor

In Persona 3 Reload, you become part of a group called SEES, which stands for the Special Extracurricular Execution Squad. The pun in the trophy’s name plays on the group’s initials, making it a light joke for fans of the game.

Doom Eternal: “The Hunters Became The Hunted”

Kill The Doom Hunters

This trophy name is a pun based on the phrase “the hunters become the hunted,” referencing ancient mythology about Actaeon. It’s a clever way to make a traditional phrase relevant to the game’s action and enemies.

Legendary: “DouBull TrouBull”

Defeat The Two Minotaurs At The End Of Chapter 8

This is a silly pun that uses “bull” in a playful way. To earn this trophy, players must defeat two minotaurs, and the name humorously exaggerates the challenge as “DouBull TrouBull.” It’s an over-the-top pun that everyone going through the game will encounter.

Star Wars Jedi Survivor: “Han Slowlo”

Defeat 50 Enemies While Using the Slow Ability

When I saw this trophy’s name, I laughed immediately. It’s a pun on “Han Solo,” one of the most iconic characters in Star Wars. The joke plays on “Slow,” referencing a game mechanic, combining the character’s name with a humorous twist.

Cal Kestis in Jedi: Survivor.

It’s funny how many good Star Wars puns are in Jedi Survivor. It’s a real shame that Lego Star Wars Skywalker Saga missed out on these jokes—they could have used some clever humor, too.
