The King Is Watching
This game is a Roguelite, so you keep some progress between plays. Unlike a Roguelike, where each attempt is completely separate, this means you can develop your kingdom over time. Your first run won’t make you a ruler; it’s more about learning and building your base.
Progress comes with upgrades. You earn these by playing, no matter if you win or lose. The choices you make when upgrading will determine how quickly you improve. Picking the right upgrades helps you move faster, while poor choices may leave you stuck.
First Upgrades to Prioritize
Focus first on upgrades that give big or lasting benefits. They will boost your performance immediately or strengthen your game for the future. These are the key upgrades you should aim for early on.
Tile Seals
Tile Seals boost the production rate of specific tiles by a certain percentage. This helps you gather resources faster, allowing you to build and expand quicker. You’ll find these upgrades in the red and yellow tech trees.
It’s recommended to get at least one upgrade from both trees early, as they provide useful boosts right away.
Banish Noble Upgrades
Your kingdom has areas occupied by Nobles that take up space but don’t contribute. Banish those Nobles to free up slots, giving you more options for growth. These upgrades are affordable and appear in the red upgrade tree.
Looking Ahead: Future Upgrades
Once you have your basic upgrades, focus on building your foundation. This is the point where you’ll start choosing more expensive, diverse upgrades to customize your kingdom’s development.
Advisor Slot
Advisors provide passive bonuses throughout your run. To have more advisors active at once, you’ll need additional advisor slots. The first two slots are cheap and worth adding early. More slots give you flexibility to tailor your strategies.
Troop Limit
Increasing troop capacity allows you to deploy more soldiers simultaneously. This is one of the most crucial upgrades, as stronger armies help you survive longer and conquer more foes.
Magic School
The Magic School building generates spells over time. Using spells regularly can turn the tide of battles, so keep it active whenever possible. When unlocked, upgrades that boost spell damage become more valuable.
New Buildings
After getting some advisors and basic upgrades, new buildings become available. These buildings serve various functions and give you more options to grow your kingdom. While not urgent, collecting more buildings enhances your overall strategy.
New Kings
In the green upgrade tree, you can unlock new Kings with unique abilities and costs. There are six to find, each with different traits. Choosing the right King adds variety and can support different playstyles.
Troop Upgrades
These expensive upgrades improve your troops’ health and damage by a percentage for each skill they have. Although costly, they significantly increase your army’s strength and are vital for late-game success. It’s best to save these for the right moment due to their expense.
