Triage is likely the top support character in Marathon, as he offers quick revives using his Reboot+ ability and regenerates health and shields with his medical drone. Marathon is a tough game, and enemies can be dangerous. Having a Triage on your team helps keep everyone alive, especially by maintaining shields and health without relying heavily on healing items, which can fill up inventory space and be costly early on before you unlock more weapons and upgrades.
Triage specializes in volt-based weapons, with several passives and core abilities that boost volt damage. I’ll explain this in more detail below, analyzing each core option to help you decide which one works best.
Having a Triage in your team during your first days of a Marathon wipe is almost essential because of that early healing advantage. Playing him gives you a good shot at surviving longer, even though he doesn’t have flashy moves or great mobility. His support utility makes him a valuable teammate.
Best Loadout for Triage
The ideal Triage setup includes the right equipment, weapons, cores, and implants—these are the foundation of a strong build.
Equipment: I prefer the bubble shield over smoke grenades. The shield can be placed to cover teammates, allow healing through the drone, and provide a safe spot to revive downed allies.
Shield: Use the strongest shield you have access to. The Protector V3 is currently the best shield in the game, but that’s end-game gear. Early on, aim for your first basic shield and upgrade as you go.
A tip: pursuing NuCaloric faction contracts early will help you get better shields from the armory.
Cores: The top Triage cores vary by game stage. Initially, start with High Voltage, which enhances volt damage. This works great if you find a volt weapon early, activate Battery Overcharge to EMP enemies, then use that bonus against NPCs or opponents, making crowd control easier.
For your second core, if you’re lucky enough to find another Triage core, go with Ounce Of Prevention. If you’re sticking with standard cores, Trophy Hunter is a solid choice. For mid to late game, aim for Hypocratic Oath and Electron Recapture Sinks, especially if you find deluxe cores. These increase cooldown reduction on abilities and ammo recharges, making your volt damage even more effective and turning Triage into a more aggressive fighter.
Head Implant: The best choice depends on your style. Options include Ping (which boosts consumable speed when allies are nearby), Augmented Capacitor (which increases Reboot+ recovery time), and Regen (which improves weapon handling, revives, and self-repair). Each has its strengths, so pick based on whether you prefer support, frequent ability use, or quicker self-healing.
Chest Implant: Helping Hands is the top pick for faster revives. If you prefer a more versatile setup, Survival Kit offers overall improvements like self-repair and quicker revives.
Leg Implant: Most flexibility here. Distance Runner improves heat management, and Solid Stance helps with weapon ready speed. Higher rarity leg implants, like Salvage Bonus on deluxe versions, add benefits such as increased salvage after exfil, but generally, these implants don’t directly impact Triage’s core roles.
Equipment and Shield Recommendations
The bubble shield is my preferred equipment for Triage because it offers support options and protection. Use the strongest shield you can find, with the Protector V3 being ideal later in the game. Early on, your focus should be upgrading your basic shield.
Core Choices
Start with High Voltage to emphasize volt damage early, especially if you get a volt weapon straight away. This core works well to EMP groups and NPC waves. As you progress, aim to pick up Ounce Of Prevention and Trophy Hunter for mid-game, which help with cooldowns and resource farming.
In the late game, the Samaritan core is the best, boosting the cooldown of your drone sharing ability and maximizing your support potential.
Final Notes
Balancing equipment, cores, and implants tailored to your playstyle will optimize Triage’s support capabilities. Focusing on volt damage and quick ability cycles make him a versatile and valuable teammate throughout all game stages.
