Outer Worlds 2 is an open-world role-playing game filled with exploration and discovery. I really enjoyed wandering around and uncovering new things. However, with all its freedom, the game can also be confusing at times. There’s a lot to learn, and some details get mentioned briefly and then forgotten, making it easy to miss important information.

When playing, you’re not just customizing your character—you’ll also meet six different companions, manage three factions, and navigate numerous missions and decisions. This can feel overwhelming without some guidance, because knowing what to expect beforehand could make your journey smoother.

If you’re considering playing or haven’t bought the game yet, it’s good to know that Outer Worlds 2 is available on Xbox Game Pass. It’s also helpful to have an idea of how long the game lasts so you can plan your playtime accordingly.

Creating your character is a gradual process that occurs throughout the game. You’ll select a background, perks, traits, and skills that shape how you play. Before you even get that far, you need to pick a backstory that adds flavor and optional dialogue choices. Your choices, from skills to perks and traits, will impact how the game unfolds.

Gadgets are another aspect—these tools affect your abilities and come into play mainly through your main quests. Knowing what gadgets are coming up can give you an advantage, and some can significantly change how you progress.

One important thing to watch out for are the flaws you can develop as you play. These are penalties or risky behaviors, like reloading often or stealing, which come with perks. For example, “Kleptomania” boosts earnings from stolen goods but causes uncontrollable theft, risking faction backlash. Since there’s no respec option after the tutorial, all your choices are permanent for that playthrough, so it’s vital to think carefully before selecting them.

The game is full of characters—six companions you can recruit, some of whom are easy to miss, can be driven away by your choices, or even killed before you realize they’re available. Building good relationships with these characters matters, as well as with three factions you can join or affect. Your actions influence your reputation, which affects how factions respond to you, your prices, and more. There are also other factions you’ll meet that you can’t join or influence.

Missions are everywhere—main quests, side quests, and tasks related to your companions. They start from the very beginning and continue throughout the game. Early decisions about missions may seem small but can have big consequences later. For example, some early missions involve navigating complex situations, like opening a safe or gaining access to a secure location, requiring you to gather credentials or figure out how to use the intercom.

Once you’re free to explore, it’s crucial to avoid making choices that could negatively impact your game experience. You might face tough decisions that lock you out of certain options or cause conflicts with factions or characters. Being cautious ensures you don’t lose a favorite companion midway or provoke factions into attacking you unexpectedly.

Overall, Outer Worlds 2 offers plenty to discover, but understanding these core aspects can help you enjoy it more and avoid common pitfalls. Taking time to plan your decisions and knowing what to expect can save you frustration and enhance your adventure.
