Select Language:

The difficulty of trainer battles in Pokémon Legends: Z-A changes as you go through the game. This means you’ll need to update your team of Pokémon regularly. Depending on which starter Pokémon you choose, your team can look quite different. Some Pokémon will have a balanced mix of types, making your team versatile. To build the strongest team that works well with your starter, aim to include Pokémon that can handle various battle situations.

Since battles in Legends: Z-A are different from other Pokémon games, traditional team strategies might not be as effective. For example, Pokémon in this game don’t have hidden abilities or innate powers. Instead, your Pokémon’s strength mainly comes from traits like Mega Evolutions, being a large Alpha Pokémon, or other special features.

Best Teams Based on Your Starter Pokémon

If You Choose Tepig

Pair your Fire-type starter with Pokémon that have strong defenses to balance out Tepig and its evolutions, which are Fire/Fighting types known for their attack power. Early in the game, Tepig is just a Fire-type, so having Pokémon with different types will help cover its weaknesses. As you progress, include Pokémon with good defenses to create a well-rounded team.

Early, Mid, and Endgame Team Examples for Tepig:

  • Earlygame: Tepig, Gastly, Bunnelby, Bellsprout, Pikachu, Staryu
  • Midgame: Pignite, Absol, Gyarados, Diggersby, Victreebel, Doublade
  • Endgame: Emboar, Excadrill, Dragonite, Froslass, Greninja, Eelektross

Early on, having Pokémon like Staryu, which is fast Water-type, is very helpful to cover Tepig’s weaknesses. Later, adding Pokémon like Dragonite and Greninja adds speed and power, making your team more flexible.

If You Pick Chikorita

Chikorita benefits from its Mega Evolution, Meganium, which is a Grass/Fairy type. To make the most of this, team up with Pokémon that can offset Mega Meganium’s weaknesses. Building a balanced team with Pokémon that excel in specific roles is important.

Sample Teams for Chikorita:

  • Earlygame: Chikorita, Fletchling, Houndour, Gible, Honedge, Meditite
  • Midgame: Bayleef, Gyarados, Sableye, Heracross, Metang, Camerupt
  • Endgame: Meganium, Lucario, Tyranitar, Charizard, Starmie, Garchomp

As Chikorita evolves, focus on attacking Pokémon like Gible, Houndour, and Fletchling to help with its weaker match-ups. Strongers Pokémon like Garchomp and Metagross have high damage potential and resistances.

If You Choose Totodile

Feraligatr, Totodile’s final form, is a Water type with high Attack. It has few weaknesses, making it flexible for team building. It can Mega Evolve into a Dragon type, which is one of the best types in the game.

Sample Teams for Totodile:

  • Earlygame: Totodile, Litleo, Ralts, Pancham, Roselia, Gible
  • Midgame: Croconaw, Umbreon, Talonflame, Florges, Scizor, Raichu
  • Endgame: Feraligatr, Venusaur, Metagross, Chandelure, Hawlucha, Tyrantrum

Early on, Pokémon like Gible and Ralts help cover weaknesses and boost your team’s overall strength. As you advance, faster Pokémon such as Raichu and Talonflame add speed, while others like Tyrantrum and Metagross give your team durability and high damage output.

These examples should give you a good starting point to build a team that complements your starter choice throughout your adventure. Balancing types and roles early in the game helps ensure you’re prepared for tougher battles as the game progresses.
