Top Strategies for Farming Ethereal Egesta, Sharkstone, and Tentacles in LAD: Pirate Yakuza

As you dive deeper into Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, you’ll eventually open up Julie’s Gearworks, where you can create new cannons for the Goromaru, rings for Majima, and other items. To craft many of these, you’ll need three specific materials that are trickier to find than the usual Components, Quality Components, and Superb Components.

These items are Ethereal Egesta, Sharkstone, and Squid Tentacles. You’ll need them to make some of the more amusing cannons in the game, along with three rings. Here’s the scoop: most of these materials can be collected in similar ways, though there is one less pleasant method for obtaining Ethereal Egesta.

Gunpowder Bill’s Cart

The quickest way to gather all three items is by visiting Gunpowder Bill’s Cart in Little Japan. He’s a wandering NPC usually found in the enclosed field area just east of the Shrine.

Which of the three items Bill has in stock is random, and there’s a small chance he won’t have any of them available. He only stocks one Sharkstone, Squid Tentacles, or Ethereal Egesta at a time, and only if he has them. He also usually offers five Components, three Quality Components, and three Superb Components at once for those who need more of these materials.

Gunpowder Bill’s is the quickest way to stock up on these items. Fast traveling to the Shrine (Drop-Off Only) taxi point is just a short distance away, and doing so resets the NPCs. Purchase from Bill until he runs out, then select the taxi point again to buy more—just keep repeating this process.

Pick Up Driftage

The most organic way to find these materials is by collecting debris floating in the ocean while sailing the Goromaru. The driftage refers to items that are visible on the water’s surface. Look for the blue-glowing items (those are the ones you want), while gold ones indicate money.

You’re likely to gather quite a few materials this way just by playing normally, but it may not be the most consistent method for finding the specific items you need.

Sea Merchant Ships

Merchant ships can be spotted in safe zones near lighthouses while you sail. There are two kinds of civilian ships:

• A merchant ship that sells goods
• A civilian vessel open to trade

It seems to be largely random which merchants and their wares will show up at different lighthouses, as the game notes, “Depending on where and when you encounter them, their item lineups may vary.”

We’ve found that the West Hawaii lighthouse often has a merchant with Squid Tentacles, though that can change. Other merchants might offer Ethereal Egesta and Sharkstone as well. Additionally, the civilian vessels may propose trades that yield one of the items you need; we found one that offered Squid Tentacles.

Toilets (Ethereal Egesta Only)

Ethereal Egesta is unique among these crafting materials because it has an additional way to collect it—by searching toilets. When exploring restrooms, there’s a good chance you’ll find an Ethereal Egesta. Toilets will eventually replenish, allowing you to revisit them later.
