Spotting is a key part of gameplay in Battlefield. It allows players to alert their team about enemy positions by pinging targets. When you do this, enemies are marked on the mini-map and shown with icons on your HUD, which helps your squad plan attacks and stay alive, especially in tight, low-visibility areas.
In Battlefield 2042, spotting works similarly to Battlefield V. When aiming near an enemy and pressing the ping button, you’ll tag them with a red triangle above their head—this is known as “3D spotting.” As long as you keep in sight of the enemy, this mark remains visible, and their position is also shown on your team’s mini-map.
You can spot enemies not only by aiming and pinging but also using gear and gadgets that your team can see on the map without showing up in the physical world—often called “2D spotting.” Items like the T-UGS and Proximity Sensors can detect enemies within a certain range and mark their locations on the mini-map. Spotting enemies in any of these ways grants you a small amount of XP, but spotting the same enemy again shortly after will not earn extra points.
Everyone can spot targets in Battlefield 2042 by pressing the spot button, regardless of their character. As long as you have a line of sight, your spot will stay active. Also, when firing any unsuppressed weapon—which includes vehicles—your location is marked on the mini-map. However, this mini-map ping goes away once you stop shooting. Using suppressor attachments makes it easier to stay hidden because it shortens the range at which enemies can see your firing pings, often down to about 20 meters.
There are several tools and gadgets for spotting enemies. These include:
- Detection Pulse (vehicle upgrade)
- Proximity Sensor (Recon gadget): shows enemies on the mini-map and in 3D at close range (up to 10 meters).
- SOFLAM (Recon gadget): provides 3D spots and can lock onto vehicles for tracking.
- T-UGS (Recon gadget): marks enemies in a 25-meter radius with both 3D spots and on the mini-map.
- Casper (Recon Specialist drone): spots enemies out to 100 meters and can also EMP electronics, including vehicles.
- Paik (Recon Specialist): uses the EMG-X Scanner for 3D spots and mini-map indicators, spotting enemies within 25 meters.
- Rao (Recon Specialist): the Cyberwarfare Suite can 3D spot enemies after killing a hacked target, while the Acquisition device spots enemies everywhere on the map without any range limit.
In terms of tips, using Casper’s drone is a quick way to identify targets safely, especially in dangerous areas. Pairing T-UGS with other gadgets like Blasco’s can help you control choke points and rack up points. The SOFLAM is especially useful on larger maps with many vehicles; it marks enemy vehicles for destruction by your engineers.
