In the game Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake, players can reclassify their party members into different Vocations. This feature allows players to explore various skills and create powerful characters. Switching between classes enhances their abilities and significantly boosts their stats, making multiclassing a more advantageous strategy than sticking with just one Vocation throughout the game.

When a character changes their Vocation, they start over at level one, and their stats are reduced by half. However, they keep all the skills and spells learned in their previous Vocation, allowing them to utilize that knowledge in their new role. Thus, even though they begin again at level one, their stats will be much higher compared to a newly recruited character in DQ3 HD-2D Remake.

How To Multiclass Vocations

Alter Classes at Alltrades Abbey

To start multiclassing into one of the 10 different DQ3 Vocations, players must reach Alltrades Abbey, located north of Baharata. The main quest will eventually guide you there to retrieve Black Pepper for the king of Portoga. It’s important to reach level 20 in your initial Vocation before you can switch to another. However, it’s advisable to wait longer before making the change, as many Vocations unlock additional skills beyond level 20.

Delaying your Vocational change will pay off, as you can’t revert to your original class without leveling up from scratch.

All Vocations possess powerful skills and spells that won’t be available until players reach at least level 40, with some requiring up to level 45. For instance, the Gadabout Vocation unlocks its ultimate skill, Channel Anger, at level 45, which amplifies all Magic attacks by 50%. To effectively leverage a Vocation change, players should strategize which abilities they want for their characters to create a cohesive and strong party.

Top Multiclass Combinations

Countless Options

There are numerous combinations players can try, and while some are more effective than others, each offers unique gameplay opportunities. In Dragon Quest 3, the Sage Vocation is often hailed as the strongest class and can transition freely from the Gadabout Vocation without needing a Words of Wisdom book. However, players should be aware that Gadabouts are not particularly strong in battle, so they may feel somewhat ineffective for a while.

Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake Review: A New Classic Of An Old Classic

Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake successfully introduces a new generation to one of the best RPGs of all time, along with a host of improvements.

Below is a table showing effective combinations of Vocations:

Previous Vocation

New Vocation

Ability Synergies

Gadabout

Sage

High Luck stat improves the chances of Sage spells landing critical hits.

Mage

Warrior

A Warrior who wields a mix of offensive and utility magic for versatile combat.

Thief

Martial Artist

High Agility allows the Martial Artist to execute Thief’s OHKO moves at the start of battles.

Warrior

Priest

A Priest with Warrior skills can reliably heal and act as damage sponge.

It’s crucial for players to ensure that the abilities acquired from their first Vocation align well with their second Vocation; otherwise, the switch may not yield optimal results. For example, a Warrior lacks dependable options for elemental damage that a Mage can address, while a Thief may not deal as much damage as other classes but offers utility skills that can be advantageous for a high-Agi Martial Artist. It’s easy to create a powerful team, so embrace the fun and experiment with your party members.

Once players have reclassified their characters, they will need to level them up to match the rest of the party. The good news is they will gain experience faster than before, and there are several locations ideal for quick leveling. One of the first places you can access is the Tower of Transcendence, located just north of Alltrades Abbey, where Metal Slimes are plentiful on the fifth floor. While grinding can feel repetitive, investing that time will ultimately pay off in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake.
