Choosing the first job for your main character in Octopath Traveler 0 can be challenging because there are eight options, each with its own strengths and weaknesses that affect your team. This new game in Square Enix’s RPG series offers new features, like creating a custom lead character who is joined by pre-made party members as you go through the story. There’s also a new town-building aspect where you help rebuild a town destroyed by villains.
In Octopath Traveler 0, you start with eight different jobs to choose from: Warrior, Thief, Cleric, Scholar, Merchant, Hunter, Dancer, and Apothecary. When you begin, you can only pick one of these jobs, which shapes how you play early in the game. Over time, you can unlock all eight jobs by earning enough skills in each one. Unlocking a new job requires advancing in previous jobs first, making it a gradual process.
Most players suggest picking the Warrior as your first job. The Warrior is versatile, providing both damage and tank abilities, which is useful early in the game. Their skills make them strong against many enemies, especially since most early foes are weak to sword attacks. Having a well-rounded main character helps with both offense and defense, giving you an advantage as you progress.
Your first party member will be Stia, an Architect, a new support role that can help heal the team. This allows your main character to focus less on healing roles like Cleric. After that, you’ll unlock Phenn, a Hunter, which gives you the option to shift away from a healing focus. You also get other characters like Celsus, a Thief, early in the game, so you have choices for offense, stealth, or support.
Although using a Thief early on can be effective—especially since you’ll unlock a Thief ally named Celsus—you’ll find that having both a tank and damage dealer early makes battles easier, especially with the enemy weaknesses you can exploit. That’s why picking Warrior as your first job tends to be the best choice for a strong start.
