Creating a character in Baldur’s Gate 3 is simple, but there are moments when you have to make important choices, like selecting a subclass or deciding which spells to learn. Astarion is no different.

Updated September 8, 2025: We’ve updated this guide with specific gear recommendations for everyone’s favorite vampire!

Astarion Overview

Astarion is a high elf rogue with a noble background. There’s something a little off about him, which you’ll probably figure out as you get to know him.

He has the following stats:

  • Strength: 8
  • Dexterity: 17
  • Constitution: 14
  • Intelligence: 13
  • Wisdom: 13
  • Charisma: 10

As his elf spell, Astarion selected Minor Illusion, which can be useful for distracting enemies, though damage dealing tends to be more advantageous. His high Dexterity makes him an effective rogue, especially with finesse weapons, and his solid Constitution helps with durability.

His attribute spread makes him suitable for sneaky, damage-focused roles. You can build Astarion either for melee combat or ranged attacks, depending on your party’s needs and your preferred playstyle.

Best Melee Astarion Build

This build uses the thief subclass, which is classic for rogues. Thieves excel at sneaky attacks and can deal colossal damage through Sneak Attack. Additionally, we take five levels in fighter to boost his combat abilities, survival, and action economy with handy class features.

Key features at each level:

  • Rogue 2: Gain Cunning Actions for bonus Hide, Disengage, or Dash.
  • Rogue 3: Pick the thief subclass with abilities like Fast Hands (extra bonus action) and Second-Story Work (less fall damage).
  • Fighter 1/2: Add Action Surge for extra attack opportunities per fight, and take the Defense fighting style for better AC.
  • Fighter 3: Choose Champion for increased critical hit chance.
  • Fighter 4: Take the Dual Wielder feat to improve dual-wielding and boost AC.
  • Fighter 5: Gain an extra attack, greatly increasing damage output.
  • Rogue 4: Increase Dexterity and Wisdom for better attack rolls and perception.
  • Rogue 5: Uncanny Dodge reduces damage from hits.
  • Rogue 6: Improve Perception and Deception skills.
  • Rogue 7: Evasion for better spell and trap resistance.

With dual weapons, especially finesse ones like daggers, rapiers, or shortswords, Astarion can perform many attacks each turn—up to six with Action Surge and multiple attacks granted by the fighter levels.

A balanced build maximizes damage while maintaining survivability, thanks to features like Evasion and Uncanny Dodge. If you prefer to push his offense even further, consider delaying his final rogue level to gain an extra feat and push Dexterity to 20.

Recommended equipment:

  • Primary weapons: Two finesse weapons (daggers, rapiers, shortswords).
  • Mid to late game weapons: The Knife of the Undermountain King or the Sword of Life Stealing are excellent for critical hits and extra healing.
  • Armor: Light armor with mobility and stealth enchantments, like Spidersilk Armor or Drow Studded Leather.
  • Accessories: Items like Helldusk Gloves or Amulet of Greater Health boost melee performance.
  • Ring: The Killer’s Sweetheart can significantly improve damage potential.

Best Ranged Astarion Build

Because Baldur’s Gate 3’s combat allows characters to switch between melee and ranged freely, building a ranged character can be complex but rewarding. This build emphasizes raw damage output and uses multiclassing with some thematic twists to keep Astarion versatile and sneaky.

Level progression:

  • Rogue 2: Unlock Cunning Actions for bonus Hiding, Dodging, or Retreating.
  • Rogue 3: Choose the Assassin subclass for advantages:
    • Assassinate: Advantage on attack rolls against enemies who haven’t moved, plus automatic critical hits on surprised foes.
    • Assassin’s Alacrity: Reset all actions at the start of combat for surprise attacks.
  • Rogue 3 / Ranger 1: Adds a level of Ranger for more options.
    • Favored Enemy: Beast or Humanoids, with Ensnaring Strike.
    • Natural Explorer: Urban for Sleight of Hand.
    • Fighting Style: Archery for better ranged attack rolls.
    • Spells: Hunter’s Mark and Ensnaring Strike boost damage and control.
  • Rogue 3 / Ranger 2: Pick the Gloom Stalker subclass for stealth and initiative boosts.
  • Ranger 3: Pick the Gloom Stalker for more stealth, motion, and Invisibility.
  • Ranger 4 & 5: Increase Dexterity, gain an Extra Attack, and learn spells like Misty Step and Pass Without Trace to stay elusive.

At high levels, Astarion can attack repeatedly from afar, surprise enemies, and remain hidden between fights. For gear, high-range bows like The Dead Shot are ideal, along with items that enhance stealth and mobility.

Equipment suggestions:

  • Ranged weapon: Longbow or Heavy Crossbow with magical variants being preferable as you progress.
  • Backup melee: Keep finesse weapons like rapiers for close combat.
  • Armor: Light, enchanted for stealth, mobility, and defense.
  • Accessories: Rings and gloves that boost damage and stealth capabilities.

Tips for Building Astarion

  • For damage maximums, focus on finesse weapons and dual-wielding to make numerous attacks.
  • Use spells and features like Pass Without Trace and Invisibility to stay hidden.
  • Keep a backup melee weapon for close-range fights.
  • Prioritize gear that boosts Dexterity, stealth, and attack rolls.
  • Don’t forget about self-healing options and defensive features to stay alive longer in battles.

This approach makes Astarion a formidable damage dealer, whether he fights from the front with melee or from behind with ranged attacks. Adjusting equipment and skill choices allows tailoring him to your preferred combat style.
