After selecting your starter in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, you’ll be temporarily unable to catch the other Pokémon offered by Taunie, but don’t worry — you can find them later in the game. The game takes place in the Kalos region, but instead of the usual Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie, you’ll choose between Chikorita, Tepig, and Totodile as your starter.
All three of these Pokémon have their normal evolutionary lines, but with this latest game, they also have new Mega Evolutions. You might be tempted to use all three — Meganium, Emboar, and Feraligatr — in your team, but at the beginning, you can only pick one.
How to Get Chikorita, Totodile, and Tepig in Pokémon Legends: Z-A
You can find the starter Pokémon from Lumiose City in the wild zone number 20. The good news is that you’ll get access to these Pokémon after finishing the main story and entering the post-game. Specifically, after completing Mission 38, Wild Zone 20 in the center of Lumiose City will open up to you.
If you’re exploring Wild Zone 20, keep in mind: Chikorita and Totodile usually appear on the eastern side, while Tepig is found on the western side. The zone is split into two parts—the east side has Grass, Water, Poison, and Psychic Pokémon, and the west side has Fighting, Steel, Ground, and Fire Pokémon.
Wild Zone 20 is also where you can find the Kanto starters (Charmander, Squirtle, Bulbasaur). You can catch any of the ones you didn’t pick from a side quest offered by Emma.
Using Pokémon HOME to Transfer Starters
Later on, you’ll be able to use Pokémon HOME to transfer your starter Pokémon into Pokémon Legends: Z-A. This will give you more options for adding Chikorita, Tepig, and Totodile to your team in Lumiose City. Keep in mind, though, that there are some limitations: Pokémon caught or transferred in Legends: Z-A cannot be sent back to previous games.
While the game offers choices like selecting between Fossils, it also provides ways to get all Pokémon naturally, without trades or transferring. Patience and exploration are key—you just need to look in the right places.
