A unique aspect of the Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remasters is that several so-called ‘unbeatable’ boss battles can actually be won. A prime example is the showdown between General Teo and Pahn. If you take this fight on hard difficulty, you might find it incredibly challenging. You may even feel like it’s impossible to win and that Pahn is destined to fail.
Fortunately, it’s not as hopeless as it seems. This guide will provide you with all the essential information about this pivotal battle. You’ll learn when to expect the duel, how to optimally equip Pahn, and what levels you should aim for before heading into the fight. We’ll also break down General Teo’s cues to help you better prepare for his attacks.
Recommended Level and Equipment for Pahn
First off, head to Teien and enhance Pahn’s claws to level 12, which is the best sharpness available at this stage of the game. Equip him with the Ninja Garb, Headgear, and two Guard Rings. All these items can be bought at the armory in Antei.
Make sure Pahn is at least level 30, but closer to level 35 is even better. At this level, he’ll still take more damage from Teo’s attacks, but you can balance things out by effectively defending against his special moves. A great place to level up is at Soniere Prison. Keep in mind that experience points are shared among party members, so having fewer allies will help Pahn level up more quickly.
Point of No Return Before the Duel with Teo
After you defeat General Milich and win the second battle of Scarleticia, you’ll return to Toran Castle. Be cautious about who you talk to in your castle. It’s wise to save your game immediately and confirm that Pahn is ready to face General Teo.
If you talk to the woman in red (Kasumi) in the meeting room located on the top floor of your castle, you’ll trigger a cutscene and won’t be able to save before battling Teo. Even if you tell Mathiu that you “would prefer not to fight [your] father,” you won’t have the option to back out: you’ll be locked into the battle. If Pahn is injured, you won’t have the chance to heal him before the fight begins.
General Teo Duel Responses
In every duel, the mechanics are straightforward: counter an Attack with a Special move, defend against a Special with an Attack, and counter a Defend with a Special. This creates a rock, paper, scissors style battle. Teo will announce his next move with specific phrases. Below is a list of what he might say and the corresponding action you should take. This chart is not comprehensive, but it should give you a solid foundation for winning the duel.

“My sword is still as sharp as ever!” “Now it’s my turn.” “Saw through my attack, did you?” “Impressive, Pahn.” “Is that all you’ve got? Now it’s my turn!” “Forever on the defensive, Pahn? I shall not hold back!” |
“Impressive, Pahn. Seeing through my attack like that. I must be more careful.” “What’s the matter, Pahn? Going to come at me again?” “Come at me, Pahn.” “It seems I lost my cool. I must be more careful…” “This next one will not get past me!” “Come at me, Pahn! Come at me with your most powerful attack!” “Very wise, Pahn.” |
“Let us see if you can read my attack, Pahn.” “I shall finish this with one strike!” “My most powerful technique…” “Impossible… Take this, then!” “This one will hit its mark!” |
