A new PlayStation 5 game, part of a large franchise, has unexpectedly received quite negative reviews upon release.
Which PS5 action game is not settling well with critics?
“God of War: Sons of Sparta,” a surprise 2D Metroidvania set in the renowned God of War universe, was suddenly announced and released simultaneously on February 12, 2026. This pixel-art adventure acts as a prequel to the entire series, depicting Kratos’ early days in the Spartan military.
Regrettably, the game hasn’t been well-received by many. Its Metacritic score sits at a 70, but the reviews lean more toward mixed than glowing. Reviewers praise the game’s solid platforming mechanics and its genre adherence but criticize it for lacking innovation or offering anything markedly distinct within the genre.
According to Oscar Taylor-Kent of GamesRadar+, the game “fails to deliver the best of God of War or the Metroidvania genre.” Meanwhile, Zubi Khan of CGMagazine described it as “a decent entry that tries to steer the franchise in a new direction but feels a little too safe and predictable for genre fans to fully embrace.”
If its scores don’t improve, Sons of Sparta could become the lowest-rated game in the God of War series. That dubious distinction was previously held by the PlayStation 3 title God of War: Ascension, released in 2013. Alongside the game’s launch, Santa Monica Studio announced they’re developing a God of War Trilogy Remake, remastering all three original titles.
