The Thieves Guild questline in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered can be tricky to start since the elusive Gray Fox keeps a low profile. Players must do some extensive searching in the Imperial City to uncover where the thieves operate. However, it can be an excellent way to earn money through less-than-honest means.
If you’re interested in joining the Thieves Guild and want to become an expert pickpocket and burglar in Oblivion, I’ve outlined the steps to kick off your journey. Additionally, I’ll guide you on how to complete the initial task—stealing the Diary of Amantius Allectus.
Steps to Join the Thieves Guild in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered
To start your Thieves Guild adventure in Oblivion Remastered, head to the Waterfront District of Imperial City. Once you’re there, look for a lighthouse and check out a Wanted Poster for Gray Fox (there are several around the city, but this one will do). After that, speak to a civilian about Gray Fox, and they will direct you to the beggars in the area. At the waterfront, make sure to increase your disposition to 70 with a beggar (I recommend talking to Puny Ancus) and inquire about Gray Fox to get your next clue: the Garden of Dareloth at Midnight, which will be marked on your map.
The ideal character class for this mission is one that focuses on stealth. However, anyone can take on the challenge, just be aware that it may be more difficult. If you’re unsure about your skills, spend some time practicing your sneaking and lockpicking.
Finding and Stealing Amantius Allectus’ Diary
Once you arrive at the Garden of Dareloth, things can get intricate, so follow these steps:
- Ensure it’s midnight; the Garden of Dareloth is hidden behind a wall in the Waterfront. Use the wait option as needed.
- You’ll find Armand Christophe along with two others, but you can’t proceed unless your disposition with Armand is at least 50+. Use bribery or conversation to boost your standing, then select “Join the Thieves Guild.”
- Armand will explain that you and the other two—Methredhel and Amusei—will compete to see who can steal Amantius Allectus’ Diary and return it first.
- Be ready to run as soon as he finishes speaking; the challenge starts immediately, so have your lockpicks handy!
- To locate the Diary, you can either follow Methredhel, who knows exactly where it is, or head directly to Amantius Allectus’ house located in the Temple District.
- Once inside, lockpick the door, and search the desk on your right (North), adjacent to the basement entrance. You should find the Diary there, if Methredhel hasn’t already grabbed it.
- Return to Christophe in the Garden at night to turn in the Diary and become a member of the Thieves Guild.
If Methredhel gets to the book first, you still have the option to pickpocket it from her before she hands it in. If you miss your chance entirely, you’ll get a second shot with a task to steal a cutlass, which is free from any time constraints or competition.
