This guide explains all the answers and details you need to complete the Lore of the Sphinx quest in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.
Unlike other mythical creatures in the game, which are fought as boss battles, the Sphinx is unique because you need to stop and talk to her. She presents riddles, and solving these correctly is key to progressing. If you haven’t encountered her yet, head to the southern shore of Lake Kopais in Boeotia. You’ll see her large statue made of striking, angular Isu architecture. When you arrive, you’ll receive the quest called Lore of the Sphinx from your father, after discovering Atlantis and talking to him. The quest is locked at level 35 and starts once you have half of a medallion.
To find her, go to the ruins near Lake Kopais. Gorgias, who is also nearby in the mist, can help you locate the missing medallion piece. His apprentice, Pibos, last saw it at the Tomb of Menoikeus in the Scorched Plains. Follow the trail to the tomb, where you’ll find Pibos’s dead body and the carcass of a dead cow. It seems the creature that killed Pibos likely ate the medallion, so your next step is to defeat the Alpha lion lurking there — or if you’re lucky, it might already be dead. The lion will drop the other piece of the medallion when defeated.
Once you have both pieces, return to the ruins to place the medallion in the Sphinx’s statue, but be aware: both Gorgias and the statue will disappear afterward. When you’re ready, approach her in her true form, and instead of a tough fight, you’ll need to answer three riddles correctly for her to be satisfied.
The riddles we faced were:
-
“At night they come without being fetched, and by day they are gone without being stolen.”
Answer: The stars -
“As small as your thumb, I am light in the air, you may hear me before you see me, but trust that I’m there.”
Answer: A bumblebee (or hummingbird) -
“What can run but never walk, has a mouth but never talks, has a head but never weeps, has a bed but never sleeps?”
Answer: A river
After selecting the correct answers on the panels around the Sphinx, you must make sure they match your answers. If you pick wrong, you might fail the puzzle, but if you get it right, she will die, and you’ll receive a Piece of Eden hidden inside a feather as a reward, along with a ship figurehead and an epic mace of the Sphinx.
