Sony is reportedly considering delaying the release of the PS6 until 2028 or even 2029, according to a new Bloomberg article. The publication states that the company is “weighing the possibility of pushing back the debut of its next PlayStation console to 2028 or 2029,” citing sources familiar with Sony’s internal plans. This potential delay is linked to the rising demand for memory chips driven by artificial intelligence advancements and the subsequent increase in RAM prices—factors previously cited as reasons for postponing the console’s launch.
Bloomberg further notes that such a delay could disrupt Sony’s carefully planned strategy to keep users engaged across different hardware cycles. Meanwhile, Nintendo, which helped create heightened demand in 2025 with its new Switch 2 console, is also considering raising the price of that device in 2026, according to industry insiders. Representatives for both Sony and Nintendo haven’t commented on these developments.
Earlier rumors indicated Sony might aim for a 2027 launch, but this now appears unlikely. MST Financial analyst recently stated that the PS6’s launch will probably be pushed back even further than many initially anticipated. Reports from late 2025 also suggested delays were on the horizon.
Meanwhile, the next Xbox console is expected to arrive sooner, with AMD CEO Lisa Su confirming support for a “next-generation Xbox” in 2027—a device that leans more towards a PC experience than a traditional gaming console.
Regarding component supply, Sony has confirmed that it has enough RAM to meet demand through the 2026 holiday season. However, there are ongoing issues related specifically to the development and launch of the PS6.
