The Serpent Puzzle starts when you enter a chamber beneath the Pope’s secret area in Rome. Before attempting the puzzle, Indiana Jones will take a photo of the large serpent statues and waterfall. Use your camera to snap pictures of the Water Serpent Fountain, as these images will be useful as hints during the puzzle.
Look to the right of the waterfall and you’ll find the Water Serpent Blueprints. These blueprints can guide you if you get stuck. You will see a Serpent Wrench on the left, with another one on the ground nearby—pick it up. The wrench is used to rotate parts of the snake and control where water flows by sticking it into the snake’s mouth and turning it.
#### Platform One
Start by raising the first platform, which is at the top right position when facing the exit. Insert the Serpent Wrench into the snake’s mouth that is directly in front of the waterfall and turn it to make the water flow to the right.
#### Platform Two
Next, place the wrench into the snake’s mouth on the right side, just to the right of the waterfall. Rotate it so water flows toward the exit gate. Then move the wrench to the snake’s mouth directly ahead of that position and turn it to guide the water again rightward.
#### Platform Three
Now, insert the wrench into the snake’s mouth directly to the right of the waterfall. Rotate it so the water flows down toward the door where you entered. Then move the wrench to the snake’s mouth below the previous one, turning it to divert water leftward toward the final platform. Finally, place the wrench in the snake’s mouth to the far left of the waterfall and turn it to direct water toward the last platform.
When the water flow is correct, Indiana Jones will confirm you’re on the right path, and the platform will rise.
#### Platform Four
Without removing the wrench, turn it once more. You’ll notice that the platform gets stuck. To resolve this, jump onto the platforms and focus on the second platform. Look upward to spot a hook stuck in the upper area. Use a quick whip and jumping skills to grab the hook and pull it down. This action releases the platform and reveals all available snake mouths for further adjustment.
### Final Puzzle
The last task involves guiding water into five specific spots by rotating snake mouths, following the clue in your journal or the provided diagram. Move to face the exit and methodically work around starting from the top left corner, rotating each snake mouth until the flow matches the pattern. Once completed, the water will flow correctly, and the door will open.
### Mithraic Artifact Location
Before leaving, make sure to find the Mithraic Artifact. To reach it, climb the platforms near the serpent’s body, then jump across to the section where the serpent is broken. Head right and descend into the tomb area. The artifact is inside an open tomb door on the second left. Collecting the artifact opens the door, allowing you to proceed to the next part of your adventure.
