In Resident Evil 4 Remake, while searching for Ashley, Leon realizes he needs to get the key to the church first. After obtaining the key, he encounters a puzzle blocking his way—two statues and a mural showing other lake locations. He must solve this puzzle to get the key. When he examines it, the map updates to show two spots where Leon needs to unlock doors.
As one of the top horror games of 2023, Resident Evil 4 Remake is filled with challenging puzzles, monsters to fight, and many obstacles for Leon Kennedy to overcome. One of the bigger challenges involves Leon searching the lake for two puzzles. Solving these will free Ashley by unlocking the statues’ heads. The two puzzle locations are on opposite sides of the lake. After crossing the first time, Leon can usually explore other areas and find ways to get across again more easily.
The puzzles can be solved in any order, but most players follow a typical route across the lake. It’s helpful to prepare before crossing—the area has two shrines to hit, and there are enemies waiting. You can stop by an abandoned boat in the middle of the lake to grab a powerful early-game weapon. This weapon, called the Red9, can be upgraded to very high power, which helps when fighting enemies with tentacles or those with Plagos heads. A flash grenade can also kill tentacle enemies instantly.
Keep in mind, there are more merchant requests here, which you can complete to upgrade your weapons or get parts to make them stronger. Make sure your knife and armor are in good shape before heading out. Your first crossing will lead to a fight, and it might cause some stress, but after that, the boat becomes a safe place to retreat to if you’re overwhelmed. Always know how to get back to the boat or to the Merchant for more supplies.
The large cave shrine door puzzle is located across the water from the Merchant’s shop, marked on the map. It’s important to clear the area of enemies inside the cave before attempting the puzzle, especially since many enemies have tentacles or Plagos heads. Once the area is safe, you’ll find two ladders. Climb the first one, then look for three painted yellow symbols on the cave walls—these might be partially hidden or broken across walls, so you may need to angle Leon just right to see them all.
Input the symbols onto the interactive sign near the locked door. The order doesn’t matter; they just have to match what’s painted on the walls. The symbols are: the egg-shaped edges (top left), an erupting volcano (top right), and two side-by-side DNA strands (bottom). When entered correctly, the door opens, allowing Leon to grab the statue’s head. Don’t forget to collect any treasures in the cave before returning to your boat.
A similar process applies to the small cave shrine door puzzle. The second shrine is accessible via a passage at the northeast end of the lake (no enemies there). You’ll need to go above the shrine room using a ladder to find the painted symbols. Everything needed to solve this puzzle is up there. Once you’ve identified the symbols, input them—again, the order doesn’t matter. These symbols are: a middle-left M shape, three wavy lines on the bottom left, and three DNA symbols on the bottom right. Solving this opens the door, and you can claim the Blasphemer’s head. Be sure to explore the area for treasures before heading back down. Once you have both heads, you can return to the Merchant at any time, but it’s good to finish collecting treasures and completing requests first. After solving the puzzles, Leon can open the church, continue his quest, and find Ashley.
