The Bell Beast in Hollow Knight Silksong is the game’s first real tough boss. Before you can defeat it, you’ll need to solve a puzzle to free this giant beetle from the webs and silk that have caught it. Once freed, the Bell Beast becomes a key feature you’ll rely on for the remainder of your journey. Below, I’ll explain how to beat the boss and how to free it from its web entrapment.
### How to Beat the Bell Beast Boss Fight
The Bell Beast has many hits and a few attack patterns. The key is learning the right responses to each attack. Here’s what to do for each move:
– The Bell Beast charges across the ground.
– It leaps through the air in an arc. When this happens, either run underneath it and slash its belly, or step back into the wall to avoid its jump and hit its nose.
– It roars and throws bells around the room. If you’re close, run toward it so the bells land over your head, or jump over the rolling bells if you’re farther away.
– The beast burrows underground and then erupts, sending some bells rolling away. Standing close allows you to run under the bells, or jump over them if they’re passing by.
– During the fight, the Bell Beast roars again, causing bells to drop randomly from the ceiling. This is usually halfway or two-thirds through the fight. Watch for dust trails from above — these indicate a bell’s about to fall, and they stay visible for the duration of the fight.
– Throughout the battle, you can use your powerful Silkspear attack and heal between attack patterns—never during, as healing takes longer than expected and being hit during it could cost you the fight.
If you’ve completed the nearby Mossberries quest, you can also get a badge that grants you Silk whenever you take damage. This can be very helpful during the fight.
### How to Free the Bell Beast
To begin the fight, you first need to free the Bell Beast from its web prison. Head to the designated spot marked on the map, where you’ll find a plaque on the wall you can interact with (if you haven’t yet unlocked the full map, our guide can help you out). Interacting with it will unlock the Silkspear skill—a long-range dash attack triggered by R1/RB that costs a small amount of Silk. This move is more damaging than your needle attack and can also be used to cut through silk webbing in the environment.
Once you have the Silkspear ability, return to the web where the Bell Beast is trapped. Use your Silkspear attack once to break the web, freeing the beetle and starting the boss fight.
### Boss Fight Rewards
The main prize for defeating the Bell Beast is the unlocking of fast travel points. With the beast now pacified, it can serve as a mount, similar to the Stag station in the first game. You’ll need to activate various points around the world, which allows you to move faster and explore more easily moving forward.
