The Shrine Vault puzzle in Silent Hill f might be your first challenge that truly tests your skills. During the mysterious journey along the otherworldly Shrine Path, you need to find three wooden plaques called ema to open the Shrine Vault door.
Keep in mind, this advice applies to the “Hard” difficulty level. If your game is set to “Lost in the Fog,” the puzzle might be different.
The only hint provided is a short, poetic excerpt about lightning striking a tree, which can be confusing when deciding which way to go. However, if you pay attention to the main points of the poem and explore a few locations, you’ll quickly find the three ema needed to continue.
The poem says:
“Lightning cast down from the heavens split asunder the decayed tree.
From the earth grows kudzu, the prophet of eternal prosperity.”
Focus on the three key elements: lightning, the decayed tree, and kudzu. Look for ema that show these objects. Unlike other ema along the Shrine Path, there will be only one of each type.
Locations for the ema:
-
Decayed Tree ema:
From the Shrine Vault door, take the winding path on the left. You’ll encounter monsters, so be ready to fight or avoid them. On the far left, find the ema depicting a decayed tree. Flip it over to see a symbol. Your journal will automatically record this symbol. -
Lightning Strike ema:
Stay on the left side and go downward. You’ll find a second ema showing a lightning bolt in a storm. Flip it over to reveal another symbol. -
Kudzu ema:
Lastly, go to the southern end of the map. You may have passed through this area before reaching the vault. The kudzu ema here is a bit harder to spot — it shows subtle leaves with light pink flowers. Flip it over to get the final symbol, which is used to set the combination lock.
Once you have all three symbols and the lock dial, return to the door. Enter the symbols in order, referencing your journal if needed. The door will open, allowing you to move forward and face more horrors in Silent Hill f.
