What Is the Golden Compass?
The Golden Compass is one of the options you can choose if you get Tezcatara as an Ancient in Act 2. When you pick this route, your game map becomes a single, straight path lined with encounters—such as merchant shops, elite battles, unknown spaces, and rest sites. All other route choices are removed, so you can’t change your upcoming events.
The path follows a set sequence:
- Normal enemy fight
- Unknown encounter
- Normal enemy fight
- Rest site
- Normal enemy fight
- Rest site
- Unknown encounter
- Chest
- Unknown encounter
- Chest
- Unknown encounter
- Merchant
- Elite battle
- Rest site
- Elite battle
- Rest site
- Boss fight
This route is consistent and predictable, which can be helpful because you always know what’s coming next. Still, it doesn’t include any special fights or unique encounters. The frequent rest stops and unknown encounters can help you improve your deck by adding new cards or thinning it out.
If you already have a clear plan or deck archetype, the Golden Compass can be a good choice. It offers many fights for card upgrades and opportunities to strengthen or streamline your deck. The rest sites between elite battles also give you safe moments to prepare for tough fights.
Is the Golden Compass Worth It?
While the consistent path has its advantages, it’s not always the best option. Comparing it to other Ancient choices like Toy Box or Yummy Cookie, which can give more powerful boosts or useful effects, the Golden Compass might feel less impactful. Additionally, relying solely on this route can be risky if you face difficulties during elite battles or unknown encounters, since you can’t avoid tough fights later on.
If you’ve collected relics like the Sword of Stone, which requires completing five elite fights, sticking with the normal map might be smarter. The Golden Compass offers only two elites, so if you need more relics or stronger gear, a more varied route could serve you better, especially since relics often help you handle tougher content in later acts.
For those lacking relics, checking the normal map for paths with more treasure chests can help you gather valuable relics or gold for buying and removing cards. Remember, the predictability of the Golden Compass can be a plus, but it’s essential to ensure it’s providing enough benefits to boost your deck’s strength, especially before the Act 2 boss and heading into Act 3.
