When starting out in Timberborn, you’ll need to get familiar with the map and your beaver population. Building a settlement takes time and careful planning, but your initial choices can make a big difference. We’ll guide you through some key decisions to help you succeed.
At the beginning, you have two factions to choose from. This choice will determine how challenging your first few game cycles will be. Here’s everything you need to know about each faction and which one might be best to start with.
### What Factions Are In Timberborn?
There are two main factions available, and your first pick will influence the architecture and infrastructure of your civilization.
#### The Folktails Faction
This is the beginner-friendly faction of nature-loving beavers. It’s perfect for newcomers because it focuses on harmony with nature, making food and water easy to gather. However, automation and more advanced technologies are less accessible early on. This faction creates a cozy, woodland atmosphere, especially suited for players who want a relaxed start and easier resource management.
#### The Iron Teeth Faction
These beavers are more aggressive in their approach, prioritizing industrialization and innovation. They’ve moved away from traditional ways, which makes resource gathering more difficult. But, they excel at expanding into metalwork and automation, making them ideal for players looking for a tougher challenge. Mastering this faction means managing complex resource systems and growing vertically with hydroponic farms and row houses. Automation streamlines many tasks, but initial setup requires effort and strategic planning.
> Don’t worry if you don’t pick a faction right away — you’ll unlock the other one as your colony develops!
### Which Faction Should You Start With?
Choosing your starting faction depends on how difficult you want the game to be, your aesthetic preferences, or even just a random pick. Here’s a suggestion for the best options based on your experience level.
#### Best Faction For Beginners
If you’re new to building strategy games, start with the Folktails. The tutorial will guide you through the basics, helping you get comfortable with the map and resource management. This faction minimizes early difficulty by emphasizing natural harmony, providing a strong foundation to face challenges like droughts and rising tides later on.
#### Best Faction For Veterans
For experienced players seeking a challenge, the Iron Teeth is the way to go. Focused on industry and automation, they require more advanced strategies and resource management skills. Growing food is more complex with this faction, but they can produce things vertically using hydroponic gardens and row houses. Automation makes their workflow more efficient once set up. Keep in mind, you need to reach a Happiness level of 15 with the Folktails before you can start a new game using the Iron Teeth as your main faction.
