Resident Evil Requiem doesn’t give players many choices during most of the game, but the ending depends heavily on a decision made in the final moments. Grace Ashcroft’s big choice determines how the story concludes, so it’s crucial to pick wisely.
Near the end, Grace faces a prompt asking her to confirm Oswell Spencer’s last wish. Spencer, the CEO of the Umbrella Corporation, was behind much of the viral outbreak in the Resident Evil world. At this point, the game offers two options: “Destroy Elpis” or “Release Elpis.” Grace’s decision will shape Spencer’s final project’s fate.
What Happens If You Choose to Destroy Elpis
Choosing to destroy Elpis leads to a darker ending. Before the facility self-destructs, you’ll hear Spencer’s regrets about his actions. After confirming your choice, Grace types “Destruction” into the machine, causing the facility to blow up. As the platform starts collapsing, Leon helps Grace escape and promises to follow her. However, once she’s safe, Grace notices Leon, who’s injured, isn’t following. She pleads for him to come, but he stays behind with the villain Zeno.
Zeno then shoots Leon in the head with a revolver, ending his life. Shocked and upset, Grace watches as the credits roll, bringing the game to a close.
What Happens If You Choose to Release Elpis
Opting to release Elpis creates a more hopeful ending. In this scenario, both Spencer and Alyssa Ashcroft call Grace their “hope” before she confirms her choice. Grace types “Hope” into the machine, which reveals vials of Spencer’s final project. Zeno then injects himself with one of the vials seeking more power, but instead, the virus marks on his skin vanish. Grace also administers another cure to Leon, healing him of the virus.
Dr. Victor Gideon appears and kills Zeno before attacking Leon. You’ll need to fight him twice—first as Leon and then against a giant mutated version. The fight involves avoiding powerful attacks, but you can pick up supplies during the battle. After winning, Leon and Grace accept they might die in the collapsed facility, but they’re eventually rescued, leading to a positive ending.
Why You Should Release Elpis
There’s no real reason not to choose to release Elpis. If you pick to destroy Elpis, the game ends abruptly with a bad ending. However, you can restart from before your decision after finishing, allowing you to see both endings without much extra effort. This way, you can experience both scenarios back-to-back.
The best choice is to release Elpis. Destroying it results in a harsh conclusion, while releasing it offers a more genuine and merciful ending. Both choices lead to different scenes and rewards, making each playthrough unique.
