Dealing with Minthara in Baldur’s Gate 3 can be tricky since she’s a strong Drow Paladin and can also become a companion. At first, she’s a tough leader in the Cult of the Absolute who blocks your way in Act 1, so fighting her seems like the basic choice. But there are other ways to handle her too.
As one of the three goblin leaders in Baldur’s Gate 3, killing Minthara helps the Emerald Grove, but you can also choose a darker path and side with her — a good option for players following the Dark Urge. Alternatively, you could knock her out in a specific way, which allows her to show up again in Act 2. There are many options to either defeat, join, or recruit her, so here are the main ones we’ve found.
As of January 4, 2024, the information here is accurate. A recent patch lets you recruit Minthara without having to massacre the Emerald Grove, although that means she won’t join your camp until later in Act 2, and you can’t romance her unless you meet her at the goblin camp after attacking the grove.
Baldur’s Gate 3 Minthara options:
- Knock her out at the goblin camp to recruit her in Act 2.
- Kill her at the goblin camp, with or without Halsin.
- Lead her to the Emerald Grove and betray her at the last moment.
- Join her in raiding the Emerald Grove, killing the tieflings, and unlock her as a companion (even sharing a romantic moment).
Knocking her out at the Goblin Camp:
You can get Minthara as a follower in Act 2 by sneaking into her chamber before freeing Halsin, then committing a crime like attacking or stealing in her presence. This immediately makes her hostile. Play non-lethally, beating her until she’s down, then she counts as dead for the goblin leaders quest. Later, at Moonrise Tower, she’ll be captured and judged, and you can choose to free her, killing the interrogators, and then convince her to follow you, leading to her joining your party without much bloodshed. This process requires good Charisma and Wisdom skills. Other peaceful ways include polymorphing her into a sheep or dominating her, and even causing a fight between druids and tieflings at the grove, which leads to her siding with you.
Killing her at the Goblin Camp:
The simplest method is to fight her directly at the camp after completing the mission to silence Priestess Gut. If you find Halsin, and he’s strong, he can help whittle down her health. You can also shoot her in her chambers with an arrow when she’s crossing a bridge, causing her to fall to her death. Keep in mind, killing her there means looting her isn’t an option.
Killing her at the Emerald Grove:
You can also kill Minthara at the grove by convincing her to reveal the location to the tieflings, then returning to warn them. When she attacks, refuse her, and start a fight. Be ready for a tough battle since many enemies will join her.
Side with her and raid the Emerald Grove:
Joining Minthara for a brutal attack on the grove is an option. This results in many innocent deaths but makes the fight easier. Afterward, she’ll celebrate with you and may become a party member, even proposing an intimate relationship. Just note that this choice causes some companions like Karlach and Wyll to leave your camp permanently. This path changes the story significantly and might be best for subsequent playthroughs, so save your game first in case you want to change your decision.
Summary:
Handling Minthara is complex with many paths, whether to fight, recruit, betray, or side with her. Choose your approach based on your style, and always save your game beforehand to keep options open.
