Sony has yet to officially announce the PS6, so there’s no actual delay to report. Still, during recent tech discussions with AMD, Sony hinted at plans for a release around late 2027.
However, some sources, like Insider Gaming, suggest that a recent surge in RAM prices—driven by the AI boom—could disrupt these plans and potentially push back the release timeline. This RAM shortage has caused prices to skyrocket after major companies like Samsung secured large portions of the global supply, with OpenAI reportedly signing contracts to purchase roughly 40% of available RAM.
This scarcity has rattled the market, prompting Sony to preemptively stockpile enough components to keep the PS5 prices stable, though the sustainability of this strategy remains uncertain. As a result, Sony might consider delaying the PS6 until more suppliers enter the market and the RAM situation stabilizes.
The last five years have been particularly tough for PlayStation, involving challenges like the pandemic, semiconductor shortages, economic instability, tariffs, and now rising RAM costs. Despite some criticism, Sony has managed most of these hurdles relatively well.
Though a postponement of the PS6 is a real possibility, such a move would require a major shift in their plans. Behind the scenes, discussions are probably ongoing, but no final decision has been announced yet.
