Kzinssie is the first major boss you’ll face in Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven. After this formidable enemy unleashes his deadly Lifesteal ability on Leon, it falls to Gerard and the rest of your party to come up with a new strategy for the rematch. While Kzinssie is a powerful adversary, his attack patterns are fairly predictable, allowing for opportunities to counter effectively.

The combat system in Romancing SaGa 2 combines elements from classic JRPGs, similar to Visions of Mana by Square Enix, with turn-based mechanics and a variety of attack and team combo strategies reminiscent of Metaphor: ReFantazio. This mix introduces fresh challenges in forming your party and picking the right characters and attacks for each battle, enabling you to create the best combinations against tough bosses. To take down Kzinssie, you’ll need to adjust your team and focus on exploiting his main weaknesses.

After Gerard takes charge, you’ll have much more flexibility in your selection of team members for the second round against Kzinssie. While some characters may still be effective from your first encounter, it’s wise to adjust your party and consider swapping members. Your ideal team setup should include:

Gerard
Bear
Therese
Andromache

Additionally, you’ll have one more slot to fill, and you can choose either James or Aries based on your playing style. Both provide valuable abilities, with Aries offering Life Water and James delivering significant damage through Hard Slash and other sword techniques.

Choose Aries if your team needs better support. If you’re looking for offensive capabilities, James is a fantastic choice.

With Gerard as a pivotal member, he gains access to Leon’s Light Magic. Be sure to train him until he learns Moonlight, which will be useful for healing during the fight. It’s also a good idea to have him acquire Fireball by visiting the Court Mages at the castle.

Bear excels in both dealing damage and defending, as he wields a mace and a sword. He can manage a large portion of the battle independently and is particularly effective against Kzinssie’s sword attacks while enabling you to Parry when necessary.

Both Therese and Andromache are skilled archers, making them valuable for this battle. Since one of Kzinssie’s vulnerabilities is to Bows, focus on using this advantage to maximize damage. Rapid Volley is especially important, so ensure this ability is prepared for the fight.

Strategies for Defeating Kzinssie

Optimal Strategy for Victory

Kzinssie is the first of the Seven Heroes in Romancing SaGa 2, and while challenging, his attack patterns are somewhat straightforward. At the start, a Command Icon will appear at the top of the screen, indicating which kind of attack he is preparing, as discussed by TheGamer and highlighted in Kakuchopurei’s YouTube video. Depending on the icon displayed, you can expect to encounter:

A Stun Slash attack, which comes with a Warning icon. This attack typically targets whoever is leading your party, so it’s wise to put a sturdy character in front, like Bear, who can Parry effectively.
A Cyclone attack without any warning. This one affects your entire team, so use this opportunity to Defend rather than attacking.

As the battle progresses, figure out Kzinssie’s key weaknesses. You might need to experiment a bit, but it’s advisable to enter the fight equipped with Light, Fire, Greatswords, and Bows to ensure you can exploit his weak points strategically.

Kzinssie’s main body has different weaknesses than his arms. While Swords, Bows, and Light will work against him, Maces can also deal significant damage.

Be prepared to alter your approach based on Kzinssie’s actions during the fight. If he’s using his arms, focus on attacking them with your strongest moves to stop him from executing his most dangerous attacks, which could wipe out your team. Don’t forget to heal when necessary; Kzinssie can inflict devastating damage if you aren’t cautious, especially if he manages to fully charge his Shadow Nova.

Once his arms are subdued, unleash Rapid Volley as often as possible with Andromache and Therese. Switch between Gerard’s Fireball and Moonlight based on the situation. Utilize Bear for offensive or defensive actions with his sword and mace, or have him Parry when needed. It may take some back-and-forth, but by maintaining pressure, you can ultimately defeat Kzinssie early in Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven.
