Borderlands 4 gives players more options to customize their experience than earlier games in the series. It features multiple skill trees, allowing you to decide how your character’s skills develop. Each character can also be equipped with a variety of unique weapons and gear to enhance their strengths and define your play style.
But what do you do if your build isn’t working well? You can pick up a new weapon to change gameplay, but if your character is built poorly, you might want to reset your skill points and start fresh. Luckily, respec-ing your character in Borderlands 4 is straightforward once you unlock the feature, though you need to do a specific mission to gain access.
### How to Respec Your Borderlands 4 Character
To be able to respec, you first need to unlock this option by finishing the mission called “Down and Outbound.” This is the third main story mission and becomes available at level three, so you get the chance early in the game.
If you’ve progressed far enough that your build feels hopeless, it’s likely you either overlooked a main story quest or have already unlocked respec without realizing it. As long as your next game mission isn’t “Guns Blazing,” “Recruitment Drive,” or “Down and Outbound,” you should be able to respec.
### Where to Find Respec Machines in Borderlands 4 & How to Use Them
To respec, search your map for Respec Machines. They look like recycling symbols with three arrows forming a triangle, and a person icon in the middle. These machines are usually located near major points of interest such as settlements and vending areas, giving you a convenient chance to reassign your skill points all at once. Most are close to fast travel stations for easy access.
Here are the locations of all the Respec Machines:
– The Launchpad
– Carcadia
– Belton’s Bore
– The Lockaway in Carcadia District, Dominion
– Food Court in Terminus District, Dominion
– Sumpview Falls in Fades District, Dominion
– Bones of Sanctuary in the Heart of the Mountain
When you approach a Respec Machine, you’ll see a cost displayed beside it. This amount depends on your level. If you can pay, activating the machine resets your skill menu to level one, letting you freely allocate and reallocate skill points as much as you want before closing it. Your overall level remains unchanged.
You can also adjust your Specialization Points at the same machine, but doing so costs Eridium. Use Respec Machines wisely, as their costs can add up over time.
