In the third Act of Baldur’s Gate 3, the villain Orin the Red kidnaps someone you know and plans to sacrifice them at the Temple of Bhaal. Rescuing this person is one of the side-quests your team can choose to pursue. Your choices during the quest could determine whether the victim is saved or gets killed.
After your first long rest in the Lower City, Orin will appear disguised as one of your party members she has captured. She will only take someone from your camp who isn’t one of your main team members. Out of Lae’Zel, Gale, Halsin, Minthara, and Yenna, she always abducts the one with the lowest approval rating with your character.
### How to Find the Temple of Bhaal
The first step to save her is to locate Bhaal’s champion’s hideout, which is a temple dedicated to the god of murder. This location can be tough to reach, similar to the previous Baldur’s Gate games. You need to explore the sewers beneath the city to find a locked door leading to Orin’s followers’ hideout.
This door is located in the Undercity area. You can access the sewers from different entry points, including:
– The hatch in the basement of the Elfsong Tavern
– The hatch in the Gardener’s Basement
– A greasy, smelly ramp down in the Flymm Cargo basement
– The door in Cazador’s Dungeon
– The Guildhall
Once in the sewers, go through these steps:
– Enter the Undercity via the sewer entrance marked on the map
– Keep going until you see a stone circle hanging from decaying corpses
– Shoot down a corpse to progress
– Fight cultists and then open the next locked door
This locked door leads directly into the Temple of Bhaal. To enter the temple, you need the Amulet of Bhaal, a powerful artifact hidden somewhere in the Lower City. If you don’t have it yet, keep exploring to find out how to get it.
Exploring the city and talking to characters reveals many secrets. Before entering the temple, you might consider an offer from Orin that could keep your friend safe.
### Should You Take Orin’s Deal?
Orin will offer a deal: kill Gortash and get his Netherstone before facing her in battle. Gortash is protected by the Steel Watch, but you can disable them and attack Gortash first. This option is flexible—you can pursue it anytime, even delaying Gortash’s death.
It’s usually a good idea to accept the deal, so your party can level up before facing Bhaal’s champion. Additionally, killing Gortash first is a quick way to obtain the Netherstone needed to access the Temple of Bhaal.
If you agree to the deal and kill Gortash, Orin will send a congratulatory note. She then challenges you to face the Murder Tribunal filled with cultists loyal to Bhaal and become an Unholy Assassin of Bhaal. She provides a location called Candulhallow’s Tombstones and the password “Sicarius” to reach the Tribunal.
### How to Become an Unholy Assassin
To prove your loyalty to Bhaal, you must convince his followers. Sarevok Anchev, a famous Bhaalspawn, leads the Tribunal. Show your bloodlust by passing dialogue checks or attacking Sarevok outright. If successful, you’ll acquire the Amulet of Bhaal, which unlocks the temple and allows you to confront Orin, who still holds her victim.
You can also attack Sarevok and his followers directly to get the amulet, but this is a tough fight unless well-prepared. Sarevok will test your soul by confronting spirits of the dead. If you prove yourself, he’ll give you the hollyphant Valeria, whom you can kill to complete your transformation into an Unholy Assassin, earning the amulet needed to challenge Orin.
### How to Prevent Orin from Killing Her Victim
When you return to the Undercity with the Amulet of Bhaal, you can enter the temple—where Orin still threatens her victim. Your dialogue choices here are critical; success depends on Charisma-based checks (Intimidation, Deception, or Persuasion). Having a character with high stats in these skills gives you the best chance.
If Gortash was killed first, you can simply confirm his fate to Orin, which will save her victim and trigger the final boss fight. Alternatively, to persuade Orin to spare the victim, you must pass a difficult DC 25 check, especially if your character excels in the relevant skills.
Players with the Dark Urge origin have unique dialogue options that might distract Orin, and using spells like Speak with Dead on her mother can also divert her attention.
Any effort to save her victim will lead to a fierce battle against Orin’s Level 12 Slayer form, a terrifying beast fighting with cultists. During the fight, freeing the victim from the altar will ensure they are saved permanently and can fight alongside you in the temple.
### Rewards for the Rescue Mission
The biggest reward for completing the “Rescue Orin’s Victim” quest is saving your party member. Freeing them from the altar with the Altar Key or breaking their chains is enough. Defeating Orin grants valuable loot, especially if the rescued person can utilize her weapons or armor, such as the Bloodthirst dagger, Crimson Mischief sword, or her gruesome magical armor.
Orin’s loot includes Studded Leather Armor +2 and the Ring of Murderous Opportunity, which has no special powers but has a unique flavor text. You can sell these items for gold.
If you fail to rescue her victim, you can loot the fallen character if they’re part of your party. Still, the best outcome is having your friend alive to continue your adventure.
