While much of recent discussion has focused on the PS6 and its potential launch in 2027 amid ongoing supply chain challenges affecting tech companies, Sony’s rumored new handheld device seems to have faded into the background.
This new hardware has been hinted at by multiple industry insiders over the past 18 months, and it appears to be a legitimate product still in development. According to a highly trusted hardware leaker on NeoGAF — the same source who revealed details of the PS5 Pro before Sony announced it — the portable is still scheduled for release next year.
In fact, it seems 2027 could be a big year for PlayStation, with both the main PS6 console and its portable counterpart launching simultaneously. Of course, internal plans might shift due to economic variables or shortages in RAM caused by AI-related supply issues, but these predictions are echoed by Moore’s Law is Dead, another reliable source of hardware leaks.
It’s not entirely clear how Sony intends for the PS6 handheld to fit into their overall strategy. Will it run all games at a scaled-down specification, or will it focus on a curated selection optimized for portable play? How Sony chooses to position this device will be crucial.
Recently, Sony added a low-power mode to the PS5, which some interpret as a way to adapt the software for a less powerful device. If Sony can price such a device affordably — a tall order these days — there’s real potential.
The portable gaming landscape has been fundamentally transformed by devices like the Nintendo Switch and PC-based handhelds such as the Steam Deck. Sharing a library with Sony’s flagship consoles could allow this new device to avoid some of the pitfalls faced by the PS Vita, assuming it’s priced right and supports a solid library of titles.
