PS6 May Hit Lower Prices Than Expected Despite $1,000 Concerns

Following the PS5 price increase, industry analysts are discussing whether Sony’s next-generation console could reach a price point of $1,000. Although that seemed impossible before, a shaky economy is pushing the PS5 Pro’s price to $899.99 starting next week. Sony will still profit significantly from its advanced system, but the price remains eye-catching, especially since the PS6 is expected to be much more powerful than its predecessor.

There’s been some speculation about a possible delay beyond the planned 2027 release window. However, with contracts signed with suppliers and production lines in place, pushing back the release could prove more expensive for Sony. Plus, the economy might not bounce back in 2028 or 2029, with AI data centers consuming computer components and inflation spiraling out of control.

A tech insider, KeplerL2, has shared some insights into the PS6, including potential pricing and the release timeframe. He mentioned that his current estimate for the PS6’s bill of materials (BOM) is around $760, which suggests a retail price of about $699 might still be feasible with a reasonable profit margin. He also noted, “My current BOM estimate for PS6 is ~$760, so I would say $699 is still possible with a reasonable subsidy. The question is if Sony will even bother now that Xbox isn’t direct competition anymore.”

This is all speculation, of course. It rests on the assumption that the PS6’s specifications are finalized and that the global economic situation remains stable. It’s also unclear whether KeplerL2 has factored in shipping, storage, and retail margins, which could increase costs further. But if the estimates hold, we might see a console priced under $1,000—definitely a relief in today’s market.

Regarding the launch, the same insider shared that delaying beyond 2027 might not be practical. He explained that Sony’s use of AMD’s 3nm chip capacity could be complicated if they delay, as most of AMD’s flagship data center chips are on 2nm. Delaying could lead to higher wafer costs and penalties. The only reason to postpone would be if Sony hoped for a drop in RAM and NAND prices, but no one can predict if and when that will happen. Thus, launching as scheduled in 2027 appears to be the most logical strategy.

Overall, it looks increasingly likely that Sony will stick to the 2027 release date for the PS6, regardless of market challenges. How they’ll handle marketing in this turbulent economy remains uncertain, but by now, the project’s progress probably makes significant adjustments unlikely.
