We weren’t expecting to hear this during our Friday night curry: a small snippet from an upcoming Mark Cerny interview confirms that AMD’s FSR Frame Generation will eventually be available on PlayStation.

In a quote shared by Digital Foundry, hardware architect Mark Cerny revealed that PlayStation has collaborated with AMD to develop this technology as part of Project Amethyst. He mentioned that the new PSSR (Picture-Per-Second Rendering) uses the same core, co-developed algorithm as AMD’s FSR (FidelityFX Super Resolution) Upscaling, aiming to prevent confusion with previous FSR versions.

Cerny stated, “To clarify, the new PSSR employs the same fundamental co-developed algorithm as AMD’s FSR Redstone Upscaling (I’ll stick to these new names instead of FSR 4 to avoid confusion).”

He added that FSR Frame Generation is also based on co-engineered technology, which he referred to as “co-developed technology” with AMD. He expressed satisfaction with how the work is progressing, indicating that an equivalent frame generation library should soon be available for PlayStation platforms. When asked about a potential release timeframe, he clarified that Sony has no planned releases for this year but is open to further discussions in the future.

While the current rumors suggest another PS5 Pro update next year—similar to the recent PSSR update—the likely scenario is that FSR Frame Generation will be reserved for the next generation, possibly the PS6, expected around 2027.

In simple terms, this technology creates the illusion of higher frame rates by inserting AI-generated frames between native ones. It reduces processing demands since these frames don’t have to be fully rendered by the game engine, which could lead to smoother gameplay without a significant performance hit. This idea is akin to PSSR’s approach of using machine learning to upscale low-res images into high-quality 4K images, easing the computational load by targeting lower native resolutions without sacrificing visual quality.

However, not everyone favors frame generation, citing concerns over increased latency and ghosting effects. The technology tends to perform better at higher frame rates, such as boosting from 60fps to 120fps, where it can enhance the experience without introducing noticeable lag.

Since this is a joint effort between PlayStation and AMD, it’s expected that Sony will incorporate some version based on their research, although details on its implementation may not be known until next year.
