A wave of viral social media posts overnight has sparked a debate about the value of ray tracing. The conversation appears to have been initiated by PlayStation enthusiast Pyo, who many familiar with X (or Twitter) could recognize. Pyo stated, “Hot take, but ray tracing is one of the most unnecessary features added to games. It damages frame rates and doesn’t really add anything meaningful to story or gameplay.”

This comment quickly drew some pushback from other users, though Pyo clarified that it was simply his personal opinion. Later, the point was amplified by a larger account that quoted Pyo’s remark and added, “Art Direction > Ray Tracing,” alongside four screenshots of visually stunning games like Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.

Discussions about whether we really need the PS6 right now have been growing, heightened by rumors that it might face delays beyond its expected 2027 launch window. If the console arrives as scheduled, it’s safe to expect that improved ray tracing will be a key selling point.

But what exactly is ray tracing? Simply put, it’s a technology that mimics the way light interacts with surfaces, creating more realistic visuals. In real life, light naturally bounces around, illuminating our environment. Many games fake this effect, but ray tracing allows each light beam to bounce authentically off pixels, resulting in more lifelike scenes.

Most recently, Resident Evil Requiem on PS5 Pro demonstrates this technology remarkably well. While the standard PS5 produces great visuals, the Pro version delivers a more immersive image at 60 frames per second, thanks to upgraded features like the PSSR upscaler.

It’s reasonable to believe that the PS6 will outperform the PS5 Pro, providing even better ray tracing performance without sacrificing speed. It might also utilize more advanced path tracing technology, which offers even more precise light and reflection simulation.

While some see little value in ray tracing, especially if it doesn’t influence the core story or gameplay, that view applies to many modern innovations. If the presentation doesn’t enhance your gaming experience, why bother with the latest tech—just pick a simple game or even a retro console like the Famicom?

Games are fundamentally visual experiences, and “video” in video games is a clue. Though it’s understandable why some might feel ray tracing is unnecessary, it undeniably contributes to creating more beautiful and immersive worlds.

Whether you find it vital or not, ray tracing undeniably adds depth to the visual experience, shaping the future of gaming graphics.
