One of the most acclaimed RPGs of all time recently received a remake, and reviews are flooding in with high praise.
The remake, titled Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, is scheduled for release on February 5, 2026, across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC platforms. On OpenCritic, an aggregator of game reviews, it currently holds an average score of 85, with 97% of critics recommending it.
Nintendo Life’s Mitch Vogel praises the game for trimming unnecessary elements from the original, calling it “the most fun version to date.” He highlights the faster, more engaging narrative pace along with enhanced gameplay features like moonlighting and stunning visuals, making the new version a compelling choice. Vogel suggests that while it may not be groundbreaking, it perfectly captures excellent gameplay and aesthetics, making it a must-have for fans of classic JRPGs.
Nic Bunce of TheSixthAxis also delivers high praise with a 9.5 out of 10 rating. Bunce describes Dragon Quest VII Reimagined as a remarkably impressive remake, noting that 26 years after its debut, the game feels modern and compelling. He believes it will resonate strongly with both longtime fans and those new to the series.
IGN’s Scott White gives the game a 7 out of 10, mentioning that the remake offers a better-paced experience compared to the original. However, he points out that some core elements have been altered too much. Ryan Thompson-Bamsey of TheGamer appreciates these changes for new players, stating that it provides a strong entry point into the franchise’s most compelling stories, while longtime fans can enjoy a refined version of a beloved classic.
This latest release continues the trend of reimagining the series, following the remakes of the first three titles, with the previous remake being Dragon Quest I & II Reimagined in 2025.
