Over the weekend, an exciting announcement revealed that one of the most cherished RPG franchises is returning with a new installment after more than ten years.
Which RPG series is receiving a brand-new game?
CyberConnect2 unveiled that they’re developing .hack//Z.E.R.O., a fresh addition to the legendary .hack RPG franchise. The game is reportedly in development “for home consoles,” with CyberConnect2 handling both the development and publishing. The company has previously created 12 titles within the .hack universe.
In the announcement shared by Bandai Namco and CyberConnect2, it was confirmed that Bandai Namco granted CyberConnect2 full control over the game’s development. Tara Hakase, known as a violinist, will compose the soundtrack, which is described as blending “the series’ signature duality of fantasy (game world) and reality (real world), infused with modern sensibilities and the unmistakable spirit of CyberConnect2,” according to CyberConnect2.
During an interview with Famitsu (via Gematsu), CyberConnect2 CEO Hiroshi Matsuyama explained that the game’s working title is centered around the theme of “restarting .hack from zero,” and it is unrelated to the .hack//ZERO light novel series by Yokote Michiko. Set ten years into the future, the game will incorporate real-world drama and other connections to reality.
Matsuyama also mentioned that the game will combine action and adventure elements but will remain true to its RPG roots. The .hack series originally launched in 2002 with the anime .hack//Sign, followed by a PlayStation 2 game, .hack//Infection. Over the years, the franchise has expanded with numerous projects, but the upcoming release marks the first game in the series since 2017’s .hack//G.U. Last Recode, a remaster of the 2006 title .hack//G.U.
