In Pokémon Legends: Z-A, one of your main goals is to rise through the ranks by winning battles. As you progress, you’ll need to defeat Royale Trainers in special matches to move forward. Many of these opponents use powerful Pokémon, often with Mega Evolutions, making them some of the toughest enemies in the game. To succeed, you’ll have to build a strong team that can counter their Pokémon effectively.
Throughout your journey, you’ll encounter Royale Trainers at key points in the story. Your choices can even influence which Pokémon they use, especially depending on your starter Pokémon in the game. Some battles are mandatory, so you’ll need to train your team enough to take on these challenging opponents.
Who Are Royale Trainers in Pokémon Legends: Z-A?
Royale Trainers are rival opponents that you face as you climb the ranks in the Z-A Royale system. This ranking is a ladder system that shows how strong the trainers are in Lumiose City, ranging from Rank Z up to Rank A.
As you battle in different areas of the city, you earn points that allow you to challenge these Trainers. Winning against them helps you move up in rank. Once you reach Rank A, you can challenge Royale Trainers an unlimited number of times, but your rank won’t increase further. This serves as a continuous challenge for players who want to test their skills and explore the game’s deep combat systems.
Each Royale Trainer has their own team, with some Pokémon holding Mega Stones to Mega Evolve during battles. After the initial few matches, nearly every Royale Trainer will have some form of Mega Pokémon, making their fights more difficult. Defeating these Trainers rewards you with valuable items like TM moves and helps you improve your team to handle even stronger opponents.
Every Royale Trainer Team in Pokémon Legends: Z-A
There are 11 Royale Trainers, each with unique Pokémon and team compositions. Unlike typical Gym Leaders, their teams are often centered around an “ace” Pokémon and its Mega Evolution rather than a specific type. Here’s a quick overview of what to expect:
- The teams include Pokémon of various levels and type combinations.
- Most trainers’ teams include Mega Pokémon with specific weaknesses.
- Some trainers face you in multiple stages, especially those higher up the ranks.
For example, one final opponent, Urbain, must be faced after defeating all the other trainers, and his team reflects the starter Pokémon you chose at the beginning of your game. His team includes powerful Pokémon like Mega Emboar, Mega Meganium, or Mega Feraligatr, depending on your starter.
To succeed against Urbain, you’ll need to understand his team’s weaknesses and strategize accordingly. Beating these trainers not only advances your rank but also provides great rewards, such as powerful TM moves. Knowing each team’s composition helps you build an effective team of counters to win battles more easily and reach new high ranks.
Tip: Remember that challenges against Royale Trainers are only available during the night cycle in the game. Use the day to prepare and level up your team before facing these tough opponents.
