Passive Evolution & All About Balls

In Ball x Pit, upgrading your items—special balls and passives—is essential to succeed. The game has become quite popular on PC, Nintendo Switch, PS5, and Xbox (and it’s included on Day-One Game Pass). But just collecting new special balls as you fall deeper into the pit is only part of the challenge. Not all special balls and passives are available from the start; many are locked until you raise your lift level.

To evolve an item, you need two compatible special balls or passives and access to a Fusion Reactor. Items can only be evolved if they are at level three. You can level them up or use fission (available via the Fusion Reactor) to bring them to max level. Keep in mind, not every combination is eligible for evolution. If you have two max-level special balls that aren’t compatible for evolution, you can fuse them instead, combining their features without creating a new ball.

Fusing two balls can still be useful since it frees up a special ball slot, letting you pick up a new ball.

There are a total of 42 special ball evolutions in the game. Most require just two special balls, but some need at least one already evolved ball. The rarest is Nosferatu, which needs three separate evolved balls (each at level three) to be combined—this is the only three-ball evolution in Ball x Pit.

You can check your unlocked special balls and evolved balls in the game’s encyclopedia, accessible through the pause menu. They are listed alphabetically, starting with the base balls and then the evolved ones.

Regarding passives, there are fewer evolution options. Only eight passive evolutions exist, mainly requiring two level-three passive items, except for Deadeye’s Cross, which needs three. Their list includes items like Cornucopia, Deadeye’s Cross, Gracious Impaler, Odiferous Shell, Phantom Regalia, Soul Reaver, Tormentor’s Mask, and Wings of the Anointed.

Evolving both special balls and passives allows for powerful combo setups, similar to how certain joker combinations in other games can give infinite benefits. Remember, re-rolling the shop with enough gold can help you find the specific ball or passive you need. Building your strength before reaching the next Fusion Reactor can be the difference between clearing levels or getting sent back to the beginning.

In summary, mastering item evolution is key to creating game-changing effects in Ball x Pit. Keep an eye on your encyclopedia for what you have unlocked, experiment with different combinations, and utilize re-rolling to build the strongest setup possible.
