The Painter’s Regret is a valuable reward, and if it doesn’t suit your character build, you can always sell it to enhance your other equipment. It’s one of the first collectibles you’ll be guided to in this area, making it tempting to pursue right away.
Every character build in Avowed can benefit from a boost to their stats, which is what this treasure offers. You might encounter a tough enemy along the way, and it appears to be located in a challenging part of the map. To reach the correct spot, ensure you follow the right paths.
Understanding the Painter’s Regret Clue
Your Destination
To locate the clue, veer off the road to the right when you spot a house atop a hill after encountering the wizard. There should be a canvas on the porch to confirm you’ve found the right house. Once inside, interact with the canvas within to obtain the treasure map.
The clue presents a fairly clear image of a large bridge and a tower perched on a cliff. While you can easily see this during your exploration, pinpointing the exact location can be trickier. I recommend visiting Fior first to trigger the primary quest; that way, if you accumulate some gold, you can acquire better gear before continuing your hunt. Be cautious, as tough enemy camps are situated near the treasure’s location, so prepare accordingly.

Make your way west from Fior and head towards the largest bridge on the map, located above the intersection of two rivers. While there are several challenging enemy camps along the river, you can dash past them. Look for the waterfall directly beneath the bridge and proceed in its direction. Once you arrive, there are various caves to explore, but you’ll want to jump onto the ledge behind the middle of the waterfall.
Inside the same cave, you will find a location that allows you to fast travel. However, avoid entering until you have leveled up, as you will be facing the Steel Garrote in Avowed, which can be very challenging if you’re not prepared. It’s best to leave this area until you can return during a quest.
Upon reaching the correct area, do not proceed forward as it could lead to unwanted trouble. Instead, head to the left and look for a broken wall. You can break through it using an explosion, so throw a grenade at it. This will open a new path you can jump across. Continue along this newly opened path until you come across an abandoned tent; this is where you’ll find the Painter’s Regret treasure.

It is valued at 300 gold if you decide to sell it. I equipped it since a significant part of my build in Avowed benefited from an increased Critical Hit chance. While I will probably exchange it for another item soon, it provides a nice boost while it lasts. I paired it with a ring that inflicted Poison damage when I scored a Critical Hit, enhancing my elemental damage and allowing me to maintain a safe distance when possible.
Once you’ve collected the trinket, I suggest returning to Fior or at least finding a camp or safe spot to save your progress. Then you can continue on the main quest or pursue another side quest. The enemies in this area can be quite challenging if your gear isn’t upgraded, so prioritize finding or upgrading your equipment to ensure your success.
Regardless, you will have a boost to your stats or a bit of extra cash thanks to the Painter’s Regret treasure map found in Avowed.
