For a large part of the game, you might find yourself low on leaves in Octopath Traveler 0. Leaves are fairly easy to gather in small amounts, and if this were Octopath Traveler 1 or 2, you’d probably feel like a millionaire just from everyday activities.
However, since this game has over 30 party members to equip and several ways to spend large amounts of leaves quickly—especially if you want Wishvale to look its best—it’s important to keep some strategies in mind to make the most of your earnings.
### Sell, Sell, Sell (Within Reason)
It’s common to overlook how much stuff is cluttering your inventory. Early on, I mainly sold only the items that were worth trading for leaves, leaving everything else taking up space. It wasn’t until I cleaned out my items that I realized I had hundreds of thousands of leaves saved up. I kept doing this multiple times and earned roughly the same amount each round. Just be sure to keep some decent armor for each party member, even those you don’t regularly use, because one of the game’s final bosses involves more than just your main eight characters. It’s mostly irrelevant if you choose a different ending route, but it’s frustrating watching under-equipped characters get knocked out instantly, despite being overleveled. Overall, you can safely sell most items, just keep a little armor on hand.
### Chase Those Caits and Axe Those Octopuffs
We have guides specifically about finding Caits and Octopuffs, which are rare enemies. The first guide covers how to level up quickly, while the second explains how to increase your chances of encountering these enemies and landing hits before they run away. Both are helpful because each variety can yield a lot of leaves—some Caits, like the Chubby variety, can drop roughly 50,000 leaves per kill. So, hunting these enemies can be a great way to boost your stash.
### Haggle for Every Shiny Object
Always buy items if a shop NPC offers them for sale, but only if you can haggle. Buying at regular price won’t be profitable, but haggling ensures you pay less and sell higher, increasing your leaves. Gems, jewelry, or empty coinpurses are all good items to flip. Once you recruit a resident who increases shop profits at Ludo’s shop in Wishvale—something unlocked after completing the “Kindlers of the Flame” arc—you’ll see even larger profits from these sales.
### Certain Nifty Abilities
The core of making money is using specific skills that boost leaf gains—either by increasing the amount you get after battles, providing a steady income from Wishvale, or stealing leaves from enemies during fights. Combining these methods can lead to significant wealth. For example, the Collect skill, available on various merchant characters and the protagonist’s merchant class, allows you to take leaves from enemies. Once a certain character returns to Wishvale and maxes out their friendship level at the church (which you unlock later), they can double the leaves you earn post-battle when active.
Some residents will regularly give you leaves once you bring them to Wishvale, and you can increase these amounts by building and upgrading a storage box. The highest-tier version can hold up to 100,000 leaves at once when stocked with town residents focused on money, making it an essential tool for amassing wealth.
