A recent development has raised concerns about the launch of the newest PlayStation Studios first-party game on PS5. While Bungie’s Marathon managed to avoid being the next major commercial failure, its initial sales estimates are less than encouraging—particularly on Sony’s platform.
According to Alinea Analytics, experts in video game market data, Marathon has sold approximately 1.2 million copies across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Of these, PS5 accounts for roughly 217,000 units.
Although sales estimates can sometimes be unreliable, Forbes’ Paul Tassi reports hearing from a Bungie source that these figures are fairly accurate. While exact numbers haven’t been publicly released and Sony likely won’t disclose official figures soon, seeing sales in this range is quite concerning.
A tweet from Rhys Elliott highlights that Marathon has sold 1.2 million copies across Steam, PS5, and Xbox, as estimated by Alinea Analytics. Despite the surface-level figures, the game has not yet created the impact Sony and Bungie hoped for, even though the core gameplay is being praised as a finely crafted masterpiece. The split between platforms shows Steam leading, but the overall sales are underwhelming.
Sony’s current financial challenges, compounded by rising development costs in the gaming industry, have led to studio shutdowns, layoffs, and project cancellations. Bungie, in particular, has felt the pinch, and these early sales estimates could do little to ease concerns, especially considering the hefty price tag associated with the studio’s acquisition. If Marathon’s sales don’t pick up, it could spell yet another financial setback for Bungie.
